Thank goodness that John Cook is Shannon Rowbury's coach.
Have I missed something on this thread, or has at least some body mentioned the fact that Shannon might actually be looking for some REAL competition before the Olympics.
Has anybody been within sniffing distance of her heading into the home straight this indoor & outdoor season.
Maybe that's what her coach is looking for.

i might try 1'58.5 - 2'01.5 with maybe a range of ?52 - 54 if someone thinks her 400 ability is in that ballpark

It would be crazy for Shannon NOT to be in Europe right now. Where else would she have the chance to race and test herself before the Olympics? She will gain valuable experience racing against top athletes, as well as the experience of racing in another environment overseas.

Agree Ruth, good to find some competition since she really hasn't had any in the US yet. Thanks for your comments to the forum.
But to the original question, I think she'll get under 4min easy with a competitive field.
She's run very strong last laps in all her races and had no one to push her. And in LA it was a hot and windy day and she almost did it there going solo on the last lap.
She's having a great year and hope for the best for her in Paris and especially in Bejing.

I understand the need for her to get some competition. It is a real shame that the US hasn't been able to give her any.
With the show still a month away, it just seems like a long time to try and stay sharp...

do you seriously think that i woud believe the top chinese is a doper & the next few behind her in the list aren't ???
to cut to the chase most believe all the chinese times from '93/'97 were bogus, so they are disregarded
next, most knowledgeable track fans only consider eastern bloc performances post-'89 as possibly legit, because that is when random testing came into play with fall of berlin wall
fastest 1500 run since '89 is boulmerka's 3'55.3, but svetlana ran a 4'12.51 mile
she went thru 1500 in 3'56.77 ( 63.14 pace for 400 ), but she wasn't chasing a 1500 time, but the mile wr, clocking 4'12.51
she covered last 109.344m in 15.74 or 57.58 pace for 400 !!!
anyhows, her converted 4'12.51 with 1.08 yields 3'53.8, which is so much quicker than boulmerka's actual 3'55.3, that most fans consider her the "true" 1500 wr holder
i just found out rowbury ran 2:03.71 for 800 meters today, i hope her best races this year are not behind her

Perhaps this is the post trials letdown Ruth predicted early in this thread. Hopefully, Shannon takes that first race for what it is, and moves on. It seems she has her head on pretty straight, I think she will.

And by the way, everyone believes the Chinese times were doped, I can remember a few years ago when many on this board stated that the 14:28 WR of the Chinese was doped and would never be approached, and yet now the WR is 14:11!! Are you kidding me!
I think the Women's 1500m WR of 3:50 is legit and on-par with, if not inferior, to 14:11 and 2:15:25.
Many on the circuit believe Boulmerka is doped and has been for years... not sure many believe she is clean.

Unless Shannon ran a 52 point in high school, you have not "hand timed" her at anything in a 400 since she has not run one - open or relay - anytime recently.
And if you reply that she has run 52 in practice, I am going to call bs on that as well.

the 14'28 was piss-weak compared to 3'50/8'06/29'31
the ole wr was 14'36 by ribeiro, who eventually won her gold at 10k, not 5k ( implying she was better at 10k rather than 5k, but her 10k pb was only 30'22 )
the "weakness" of 14'28 showed up within just 1y of setting when szabo ran 14'31 & oaziz right behind her in 14'32
it was a miracle this record survived 1y let alone 6y !!!

14'11 is still a long way off what wang couda run in '93 if she'd run a 5k
her actual 1500/3k pbs were 3'51.92/8'06.11 ->

remember though her 10k of 29'31 was run of terrible splits : 15'05/14'26 - easily conceivable she couda put together a coupla back to back 14'40s for a 29'20
anyhows, i'd have put good money on her running a 14-flat that year - the 'thopys are still at least 10s off that
n b - neither wang's 1500/3k were ideally paced - i remember seeing her splits a while ago & noting ~ 3'51-flat/8'04 looked sensible guesses that day in ideal paced races

the 10k may be a bit quick for her as every runner has an "ideal" distance - for wang it was probably 3k & she wasn't as good at 10k, but still likely quick enough for <29'20
