I got confirmation from a buddy that was at the race Webb took the race out hard, 4:20 first mile and blew up. Dropped out at 2.5
This is going to play with his head.
any news what time mo farah finished with? british record is currently 13.30?
anyone that believes the food poisoning excuse in New York must also believe that Meb also had food poisoning in New York. Why can't these top guys just say " I got my ass kicked".
So Webb made himself puke at 4miles for added effect?
I wouldn't think a 4:20 first mile would be that hard for Webb.
I wouldn't think that a 4:20 first mile would be all that hard for Webb.

4:20 wouldnt be too fast for the first mile on that course. It actually has a net elevation loss.

Agreed. He was going for the 13:24 5K record which would be ~4:20 pace and then a kick.
At around a half mile Webb was tucked in behind the pack, and at 2 miles he was a couple strides behind the lead pack in 8:48. He looked like he was struggling to keep up at that point. A couple minutes later the announcer said he was about 10-15m behind the leaders, and I guess shortly after that he stopped.
I heard he didn't run well had some issue and will later make a public statement about not even counting it as a race to try and save face. But thats all I heard?
great showing by the Americans in their own country....give me a barf bag.
Given Alan's performances last year I take this as a good sign. I mean of course its never good to dnf, but at least this means webb isnt peaking too early.
I would like to second Wrong Choice's opinion above. In my humble opinion, a professional athlete in ANY sport is solely responsible for any outcome; no matter success or failure. Therefore anything he/she does should always be dependent on said success.
Food poisoning? What did you eat the night before the race that would give you food poisoning. What did you eat? Sushi with maybe a blowfish appetizer? From what I know, I have never heard ANYONE get food poisoning from pasta!
Why do you make excuses off of parameters that you control, or should control if you are going to call yourself "professional"?
Alan Webb is a fine athlete. He's dedicated, sincere, and surely talented. He's one of the best we've had since Kennedy, Scott, Shorter, or even Pre. I am sure he hates to claim an excuse, especially because most of the time he is forced into it by the media desire for knowledge. In the end however, own up, impress us by just in fact saying, "I got my ass kicked", and do it right the next time!
Mottram is a prime example of the whole picture.
Oly 1500m is 4 months away...plenty of time to get back on track...no worries

There were only 2 U.S. athletes entered so the odds of winning were slim to begin with - even moreso when 1 drops out.
The real distance guys are keying up for track qualifiers at the end of April. The US has done nothing but improve the last few years. Choose to be positive.
I agree...the Olympics is all that matters and is far enough away to correct any wrongs he's having right now.
I personally think he's just putting too much pressure on himself to destroy people and break records every time he runs. I think every runner have those thoughts of pr'ing in the back of their mind before races, but the emotional stress can sometimes lead to physical fatigue and staleness. I think he should just keep doing what he's doing, stop trying to live up to everyone's dream of him being the great white hope, and just be Alan Webb. Screw whoever doesn't like him! Now's the time to have that 'healthy' sense of selfishness.
