Flagpole Willy vs. Sagarin
Hare vs. Tortoise
Ovett and Coe only raced each other when they had to--in the Olympics. Their rivalry was a media creation.
The rivalry between Shorter and Rodgers was also mainly a media creation. They were in some of the same races, like the world cross country championship in Morocco in 1975, where Rodgers finished third and Shorter 20th. But usually one was running well when the other was not. The 1976 Olympic trials marathon was one of the few times they ran close together. Rodgers also was in the lead pack in the 1976 trials 10,000, but he fell off the pace, as Shorter outkicked Virgin and Bjorklund overtook Rodgers. Some of the best head-to-head races between Shorter and Rodgers were when they were masters.
Nobby Hasizume vs Richard Gibbens
Landy vs Bannister (ultimately) vs. 4 minutes.
briefly mentioned earlier, but a great one nonetheless.

This is correct. Shorter's and Rodgers' best years didn't really coincide and they had few meaningful battles during their prime years. Their rivalry was primarily manufactured years later by race directors needing to sell expo tickets where these guys were speaking.
