I agree Wilson and Lomu are great athletes but they are not "track guys". Please reread original post.
Ellison "Tarzan" Brown. Boston Marathon winner.
How can you leave out Roman Sebrle, world record holder in the most comprehensive of all track and field events, the Decathlon???
Some would argue that many decathletes are athletes that are good enough to be elite long jumpers or sprinters so they learn other events and become good decathletes. I'm not saying I agree with that assessment but I have heard it a few times.
reggie bush? ran HS track with exceptional results. weve seen what he does on the football field, or used to do.
Yes you are correct. Jackie R. was a football, basketball, baseball, and track star while at UCLA. He didn't just compete in all of those sports he was a great at all of those sports. Track genes ran in his family as his older brother Mack won an Olympic Silver medal at the 1936 games in Berlin. He finished 2nd to a guy by the name of Jesse Owens. Jackie is without a doubt the best all around athlete in US history. He is an athlete that transcends era's in that he'd be an All-Star if he played baseball today. Another fun fact is that he was a Republican.
I understand what you are saying and it probably goes for most decathletes but not when you are talking about the world record holder. "Greatest Athlete" speaks to being able to do many athletic type events at a high level. A decathlete as Dave Johnson put it and I am definitely not quoting, is someone you could throw in almost any sport and they would do well at it, not excel. That is a huge talent in its self. I am sure Deion Sanders, Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson would have done great in the decathlon if they so choosed. While Lance Armstrong was a great, if not the best cyclist, I am pretty confident he couldnt cover too many sports or Prefontaine either, they were the best in their specific sport. I am sure if Roman wanted and trained for baseball, football, basketball, soccer, hockey, tennis, swimming, bobsled, skiing, etc. with all the time he has put in the decathlon he would do well at those as well, not saying he would be elite but I am sure he could do well. Now "natural" is a whole nother topic...
