DQ - senior year HS, I had qualified for regionals in the 800 and 1600. Our 4x800 surprisingly made it out of districts, so the coach decided I would run the 4x800 at regionals to try to get the relay team to states, and focus on the 1600 individually, where I had the #2 time in the state. He forgot to drop me out of the 800 individual, so as soon as I ran the 4x800 (at the beginning of the meet), I was DQ'd from the open 800 and 1600 and the team was DQ'd from the relay at the finish (we didn't make it anyway). There was a rule in VA at that time that if you ran anything over 800m then you could only do 2 events. So, DQ and no state meet for me...
DFL - never
DNF: Never
DQ: Likewise
DFL: Last spring I had been training for a few months trying to take a crack at the elusive 16 minute barrier (PR 16:06). I entered my first college track race at altitude (5500 ft.), unattached, of course, and I was coming off a comfortable road race win of 16:24 where I won by nearly a minute. I hit the first mile in 5:08, feeling good, but then I tanked. I think my last 4 laps was 6:15 or something to finish in 17:37. Worst and most embarrassing race of my life.
DNF - Almost, went out way too hard freshman year of XC on a 90 degree day and was dying by 5k. I stopped just short of 6k, turned around and walked backwards then said f*** it and ended up finishing probably the worst race of my life.
DQ - Nope
DFL - First collegiate 10k, I got put in the very good section because my coach used my 5k as a basis for what my seedtime for the 10k should be even though this would be my first 10k. I was hurting just staying with the pack through the first few laps and ended up running a huge positive split and getting DFL. Embarassing to say the least. Made up for it in my second one though.
Flagpole, don't sound so pompous about never getting DFL. If you race truly great competition it can happen. I think Webb has been DFL a few times. Are you a better competitor than him?
never DQ or DNF, although I was DFL once...at my last college race ever. regionals...had been injured most of the season and my asthma was going crazy. i got the sympathy clap and ran slower than i had as a freshman. incredibly embarrassing but its probably the reason that i'm training again now. if i had finished my college career with a race i was proud of, i don't think i would have any motivation to go after it again.
My first ever DFL and DNF this past year. DFL in a 5k, DNF in a marathon.
Not a good thing.
DNF'd-Once in high school durning an outdoor two mile. Ran on a stress fracture in my foot until i couldn't run another step. Took a few months to heal because of it.
DQ'd-Once in high school during an indoor 4x800. On the last turn durning the anchor leg, I was caught... well I guess you could say... hitting a guy with the baton. I got boxed in pretty bad as we were heading into the turn and i jabbed the guy in the back with the baton to get him to move.. He finally moved, and I beat them to the line and won, but they DQ'd myself and my team shortly there after.
DFL-Hell no. I wasn't great, but I was always better than someone else.
DNF - One marathon (Palos Verde, June 1976?) I ran soon after a nasty intestinal virus I caught at Summer Camp (US Army type). I tried to race but got system cramping early -- stopped to drink Gukinaid (spelling?) before 10mi, at the half and again near 20. Each time I repassed everyone but it would not clear up, which was too bad because it might have been my best marathon for my level of conditioning (first sub-6 pace at the time was was in the top 10). Eventually I just stopped to read the LA Times on the Track national champs and waited 15-20 minutes for a friend to come by. When he came I jogged the last 5+ miles and finished in 3:07.
DQ - No
DFL - possibly my freshman year in HS in C 1320, but not sure

IF you judge the greatness of a runner by whether they have ever been DFL, and IF Alan Webb HAS been DFL (which I'm not so sure about), then yes I'm a better competitor than him.
Now, to be a bit more serious, the question wasn't "do you think you could ever be DFL", it was "have you ever been DFL". Put just about everyone here in an Olympic final and they will be DFL every time. BUT, I have never been in an Olympic final. Can only judge my placing based on the competition I raced against, and of any race I've ever been in...high school, college, post college, the thought of being DFL was never even close to a reality. I've never even been in a competitive race where I finished below top 10% I don't think. And, as I've won more races than I can even remember, being DFL just was never an issue.

DFL -- No way. No how. Was not even remotely a possibility in my competitive days that I would have sooner thought I'd win the lottery. Sorry if that sounds arrogant, but it's just the Truth Ruth.
Of course DFL is a possibility - it just depends on the level you're running at! Many greats have DFL'd - in the Olympic final 8th=last in most cases.
Anyway, mine is:
DNF - yes, one time I was very dizzy and came off the track
DQ - no, but several warnings for lane infringements
DFL - yes
DQ: Never, but I got some warnings in walking races for "creeping"--not straightening my leg. (If I could have straightened my leg I might still have been a runner!) Anyway, I probably should have been DQed a few times but I was no threat to take a medal from anybody, so they let me finish.
DNF: An 880 in HS and a mile in college. Just not in shape, started too fast and quit. A real feline move, both times. Never DNFed a road or cross-country race, including marathons and 50k walks.
DFL: Only if you don't count DNF's (? I think). I PRed my half in a race where I was the last finisher, but a guy dropped out midway. And in my first 50kmRW I was dead last all the way--never ahead of any competitor, not even for the first step--but still finished in the top half ('cause 60% of the field DNFed). Twice I got within a few yards of a competitor, but both guys quit before I passed them.
DNF - four times
1. Dropped out of x/c race because of flu. Shouldn't have run really but I had been in good shape prior to getting ill
2. fell badly in a x/c race - i was laid flat out on my back for ages forunately i was near the finish so i didn't have long
3. another x/c race - pulled a calf muscle half way round
4. fell at the water jump in a steeple chase and my leg is still twisted as a result. Haven't run well since (2003)
DQ - no, but nearly happened after getting into a shouting match with an official who told me to put some tape over the adidas logo on my vest! He said the logo was too big and told me to cover it up or take it off. This was at an open meeting in front of one man and his dog! FFS!!! I told him I had paid my £2.00 to enter and fully intended to run and it was only after the other athletes started moaning at him that he relented and let me run.
DFL - half a dozen times or so in track races, but it's no big deal - I once finished last after running 15.35 for 5k which was a PB at the time.
I've DFLed a few times in track races. My coach had the idea that the way to make me improve was to throw me in way over my head and hope that I responded. Not necessarily a bad strategy, but it really didn't work for me. I have often been put in heats that I have no business being in and then DFLed.
I have never DNFed or DQed in a running race. I did DQ in a swimming race once when I was eight because the lady thougt that I was doing the butterfly kick wrong.
I DFLed at districts my senior year of HS cross country. I had busted my ankle two weeks before and missed a lot of training time. So, I was going off of about 4 days of running and thought I felt good enough. I was wrong.
no.
DNF: Nope, although it was very tempting in my first marathon (a week and a half ago) when I had to walk at mile 23.
DQ: a mile race in high school, one of my teammates tried to pass me and ended up getting his legs caught in my feet. We both went down and crashed into the infield. After we finished they DQed us, but I stil ran only a few seconds off my PR.
DFL: too often to count. I am not a fast runner, and I was even slower in high school. I also skiied cross country and I was even worse at that!
DNF: When I redshirted I paced one of the younger runners in a 5000m at a home meet. I wasn't in very good shape, so I just stuck in for 8 laps or so. Also, when I was in 9th grade I DNFed my first ever 300m hurdles race. I had just run the 400m and ran the 800m (three races back to back to back.) Still have scars.
DQ: I don't think so. I've had coaches TRY to get me DQed, but without success.
DFL: Not counting relays, the only time I can think of was the race where I set my steeple PR. I also won it. Not a very deep field.
I'm surprised nobody bit on this one, but I will: photo?

Oddly enough, my 5k PR of 15:03 was run at a meet where I DFL'ed.
Talk about not knowing how to feel after a race.
I can 'top' that: I set my still-standing 5k PR in a 10,000 in which I was DFL. I ran 15:17 and less than a lap later most of the field went by me. Ended up getting lapped twice more and finishing in 33:11. Not only was I last but everyone in the field but one lapped me at least once. I had absolutely no business being in that race.
DNF: never
DQ: never
DFL: multiple small XC meets and high school 3200's (I was really slow in high school), I think I only had 1 or 2 in dinky college 5k's though.
