I have only raced common distances and am not a sprinter, so I don't have experience with the 400h, 600m, 1000m, or even steeple, but I could see where 600m would hurt like a bitch. I've found that the pain you get at the end of a 400 is the most intense; it just doesn't last very long. The pain with an 800 is a little less, but it lasts longer. For races longer than 800m (or 1000m?), I've found you deal with pain for a much longer time and it takes a lot longer to recover after the race, but the pain is usually not as intense. How many times have you seen someone start to tie up and really strain the last 100m of a 10000m? Not really that often. Watch a 400 or 800. Nearly everyone in field usually ties up a little the last 100m or so.

I really think that saying one distance is harder than others is completely arbitrary. Someone said earlier that they think 3000 is a really hard distance. Generally speaking I would disagree completely, because I think most 5000 races are way harder than a 3000. I think that the pain type between the two is very similar except it lasts a lot longer in a 5000. However, one of the most painful races I've ever run was a 3000. Generally I would say the hardest races are a moderatley paced championship style 5 or 10k. With these you get the long enduring pain of a distance race, and the potential for the "tie up" pain of a 400 or 800. I think that the hardest race is one where you get yourself in over your head, regardless of distance.

that was the old 'gym class' run that we did for time (it was 660 yds in those days). every year the track coach would get a new guy that popped a fast 660 in gym class.

Rumored to be WB, never publicly confirmed. Some rich guy paid a ton of money once to have a private dinner with her, provided she agree to tell him who it was really about. I think the money went to charity.

I am a mid distance runner but I feel like anything 1 miles and below is not that hard mentally, yea you get some lactic acid early, but 5,000 and up I find much harder because you have to try and stay relaxed at a pretty fast pace and then with 600 to go you have to race a 600 and personally I close in about 1:32-1:35 last 600 if im on and I can only run a 1:25-1:26 fresh 600, so the longer mid distance ones seem harder to me. However at about 15k to half a marathon the kick is a lot less important and you are going a pace which is a lot more comfortable so they always feel like a fast tempo run that keeps going a few extra miles
