I have a friend who regularly runs 16 for 5k.
and 1:15 half.
His training is totally Marathon based.
His Marathon p.r. is 2:50 (Las Vegas)but He normally runs 2:55-3:05.
Is He a Good 5k runner or a Marathon Duffer?

Marathon duffer. 1:15 shows he converts 5km into half marathon well. He should be able to do 2:39.
I've run a 240 and have also won a Marathon in a slower time. I think guys like me are aware that when we win a Marathon that it's because a lot of people simply did not show up that day. I know guys who are beating my PR's in training runs. I know I'm just a guppy in the food chain but it's still fun.
I won a few 5K's in 15:50-16:10, but with a marathon best of 2:38, I never came close to winning one. Seems like it's a lot easier to catch a small, soft field in a 5K than it is in a marathon.
years ago I ran 2:40- 2:44 for the marathon and 16:45-low 17:00s for 5k (focus in training was marathon), and couldn't win but could place in races in women's division. Prize money offered and the size/ prestige of the race seem to be the limiting factors in how easy it is too win for most folks.
Ran 2:37 with a 5 click pr of 16:22.

Are you me?
I'm...scratch that...was a 2:37, 1;15, 16:22 runner myself.
Came second in a marathon once which was kinda fun.
I have a 14:34 5k and 2:30.12 marathon. I value my marathon time more though I have run several under 2:32 and never approached my 14:34 PR 5k.
I am a super consistent 16:20-16:40 5k'er off regular base training (with pr of 15:50 after specific training). I have ran three marathons while at this fitness. The first two were conservative and went 2:47 and 2:48 with slight negative splitting. The next one I wanted to PR and went out for 2:40 pace and blew up horrendously around mile 22 and crawled in a 2:52. Just can't live up to the tables..
2:30 = 15:00
2:40 = 16:00
3:00 = 17:00
I seems to be the consensus.

People have mentioned specificity of training with regards to the marathon, but haven't really focused on it with regards to the 5k, but that's a big part of the equation. A lot of good amateur runners in their late 20s and early 30s are marathon focused. They may run 5ks throughout the year, but they don't do them in peak shape, and they don't necessarily do really hard 5k-specific workouts. So you see guys running, for example, 5ks in 16:45 and the marathon in 2:31, in the same year. But it doesn't really mean that they're "16:45 guys." If they put in a cycle of serious mileage and hard track workouts, culminating in a 5k in good weather, they might be 15:30 guys. But instead they're just messing around with a few hot weather road races during their off season.
pretty sure i'm not you chief. what a dumb question LOL
