i always thought beer depletes vitamin B which in turn, contributes to a hangover. That is why taking a B vitaming before and after a heavy session will help with the effects of a hangover.

That's back in the good old days when people would train hard and after would have some beers talking with other runners about training and racing.---you didn't think about calories and how it impacted physiologically. That's before the techno freaks took over.
The running scene was more fun then.I don't need any of the posts about DWI's,alcoholism and how it impacts the brain and body.I know that, and anyone with a brain, which includes 99% of the people on this board, know that.
Lighten up,your life or running could be over tomorrow.
Goin' to Surf City
I have a beer with lunch on hot days, maybe about 1 - 4 hours before a run, and I always feel better than without having a beer. For me, 2 is the last number where it seems beneficial. When you're talking about 5 or so beers right before a run, I think it messes you up.
If you enjoy beer/alcohol, don't deny yourself that pleasure as it's gonna end up being detrimental to your running cos you're not leading the life that you wanna live.
