I was an undergraduate at M.I.T., but didn't know that M.I.T. ever produced any Olympic gold medalists in track and field. Thanks for that bit of information. It (almost) makes up for the time that I wasted reading this thread.

This is a running website. How many pole vault threads do you see on here? The pole vault isn't considered a running event any more than fencing or ping pong. "Olympic finalist" means a runner who ran in the finals. Not someone who competed in a nonrunning event or who failed to run in the finals after qualifying. You're right. It's not even ambiguous. This is a guy DID NOT RUN in an Olympic final. So St. John's is the winner.
