txRUNNERgirl - go watch those classics you list as well as others (notably Dr. Strangelove) listed in the thread. Not sure if you have seen it and not listed it, but Taxi Driver might be up your alley. Also Big Fish might appeal to you - one of the best of the last decade I think.

Another vote for Unforgiven. This movie is a perfect as a mathematical proof. And the final shootout is the best climax ever captured on fim.

When did it become in vogue to bash Kane? It seemed to start after AFI ranked in #1 in American cinema of the 20th century.

First, it's still extremely watchable. Welles, Joseph Cotten and Agnes Moorehead are excellent and the effects and camera work are surprisingly acceptable to the modern palate. Second, the reason the effect and camera work have aged so well is that every movie made after it owes a debt to the work that Welles created. The framing devices, cinematography, makeup, and writing are so ground-breaking that you could spend years breaking down nothing but that film.

It's fine if someone's person tastes steer them away from the film, but realize the impact of it. The only other American film of comparable impact is "Birth of a Nation" which is pretty much unwatchable today (racism, etc.)

Dont include me in that group. I never thought Citizen Kane was #1 or top 10. I think people get too caught up in the groundbreaking technical attributes of the film they fail to realize that for the most part the metaphorical aspect was weak, the acting is good but there are many films that have much better acting. The storyline also wasn't very creative to be honest. It was very one-dimensional. Without the camera work this movie wouldn't even be discussed or thought of as a legit candidate. Not only that but when I found out what 'Rosebud' was at the end, I WAS very angry. It was like watching the ending to "Signs"...great build up to a very weak "message"/"metaphor" or whatever you want to call it.

The movie is very basic as far as the screenplay is, fact is it lacks so much depth that people think there's more to it than there really is. Which is why it can be debated over and over again because of the lack of depth you can never really come to a conclusion on it.

I would say Schindler's List is another very good but overrated movie. It's the typical movie that pulls so much at your heart strings it's hard to say "it was an okay movie"...at the time you wouldn't hear anybody say that but probably now more than ever. Just look at "Passion of the Christ" many people didn't let the tugging at the heart strings blind them from seeing the movie as just a good movie and nothing else.

Quigley down under is a awesome movie. probably not top 10 of all time though.

It seems that to be a great movie it can't be a comedy at all.
