George C. Scott declined his award for Patton, as did Marlon Brando for The Godfather. That takes balls.
what about Samuel L in either black snake moan or snakes on a plane?
in all seriousness tho... some great choices already, I loved Bill Murray in both Broken Flowers and Lost in Translation.
Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven was great as well.

All good choices. I just watched Black Snake Moan. Really liked it. Lost in Translation is one of my top 5 all time movies. Not exactly in the caliber of the performances we are talking about, but Will Ferrell was very good in Stranger than Fiction last year. That movie reminded me of Lost in Translation.
I had always thought it was just me that thought Duvall was a great actor, one of our best ever. I am glad to see others who feel the same way. He has played great characters from great books, more than any other actor I can think of. Boo Radley, Gus McCrae, Tom Hagen, Bull Meachem. I like almost any movie with him in it
It wasn't exactly the lead, and I know it was sci-fi and not something deep, but Rutger Hauer in "Blade Runner" was pretty terrific
I wouldn't say he really played Boo Radley, more like he sat in a chair at the end of the film.
At one time I believe Guinness Book of Records said Robert Duvall was the best actor alive. Not sure how they figured that out, but its what they said.
He didn't do such a good job in Deep Impact. Maybe that was the shitty movie more than him though.

Duvall has many, many fans. Wake up!
Ja Rule in "The Fast and The Furious".
Duvall has had some interesting things to say about acting. He thinks "Lonesome Dove" is his best work and thinks his best moment ... his reaction to a hanging ... was essentially an unplanned mistake.
Kilmer! Another awesome flic he rocked in was Real Genius a great movie...Mutch, Laslo...sledding in the dorm halls

Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday in Tombstone!!! You can't match the quotes that he put out in this movie.
"I'm your Huckleberry", "I'm afraid the strain was too much for him to bare" and many many more
the pig in Babe.
or DMX in Exit Wounds.

I say that a compelling argument can be made for Jon Voight's performance in Anaconda.
Larrie Olivier as Richard III, brilliant!
johnny depp - blow
billy bob thorton - bad santa, arguably the funniest movie ever created
The best couple on the silver screen = Sherley Stoller and Tony LoBianco as Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez. Crap lighting and worse sound made this cult classic even darker, and this story is about as dark as they get. The real life Martha and Ray met up with Singsing's famous Sparky in '51.
How good was Hackman's version of Eddie Egan in the French Connection...some say that Hackman played the Popeye Doyle role based on Egans goodcop version of Good Cop/Bad Cop.
Hands down it was Tom Cruise in "A few good men"!!
If you don't agree with me "you can't handle the truth!!"
I totally agree, BAD SANTA IS PHENOMINALLY FUNNY
I love some of the films that have been pointed out aswell, such classics as caddyshack, over the top and exit wounds.
Although I still haven't seen his Academy-Award-winning performance in "Capote" (probably because I haven't gotten a DVD player yet), Philip Seymour Hoffman is perhaps the one actor whose performances consistently wow me. (There may be a better verb than "wow," but it'll do.) Among my favorites are his performances in "Boogie Nights," "Magnolia," "Happiness," "Loving Liza," and (to illustrate his range) "Along Came Polly."
By the way, in the praise for Duvall, I didn't see any mention of my favorite performance from him -- playing the role of Mac Sledge in the wonderfully understated "Tender Mercies," for which he won the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.
Hey "Gut!".......GO MENDON XC!!!
