If the local paper reports the results, are you going to "double-report"? While in the grand scheme of things, not many read or care about a name in the paper, it is annoying to see someone who didn't really win the age group listed as the winner of the age group that you really won... and the rightful winner of the age group ignored because they finished too deeply in the "overall-elite" category for the newspaper to consider reporting.
I recently organized a race that gave running shoes to the overall winner(m/f), and restaurant certificate to age group winners. I double dipped them, and the prizes are different enough for it to make sense.
I've also won a couple races that double dipped with big 18 inch trophies, and I loved it. One of them was terribly uncompetitive(won the 10k by 3 min).
Don't ever believe a runner who says he doesn't care about trophies. We love that stuff. We take them home and look at them for hours, fondle them, and place them in places around the house to see how they look.
I agree - no double dipping.
This brings to mind a 5k road race that I won a couple years back. I got a ribbon for coming in as the first woman. The draw prizes for this race were pretty good and volunteers who had worked the water stations and so on were allowed to throw their names in the for the draw prizes. A friend of mine won a pair of Sauconies. I got a ribbon.
No....really I don't like trophies at all. If you give away something original I think overall winners will keep it. If you give away a trophy to first you are probably throwing money away. You should ALWAYS allow double dipping for masters (where money is concerned). There aren't many age group awards that give money....so I don't think you should for others.just my 8 cents worth

My daughter won a black T-shirt in an Envirosport race (that is the only prize given at Envirosport races) a few years back and on the ride home I said something like, "that was a good run today". She said she should not have taken the T-shirt because there was a woman ahead of her who was running the half and she was running the 7 mile race. It was a out and back where the half continued along the trail and I never saw the other woman go by but she did about a min ahead of her. It was not double dipping but she rarely wears that shirt because she feels guilty for "winning" it. I hope all the age group non winners feel the same.
I believe the more people that receive prizes the better but I ran in the days of amaturism. I think that after the thrill of your first trophy they are useless. I have given mine away including a Boston Marathon 5th place trophy. (Sometimes I do wish I had kept that one but it was recycled too.)
At 5'10" and a muscular 175 pounds, I ain't gonna win no road race. But if some runner who weighs 50 pounds less than me wins the race and takes an age group award from me, someone's gonna take a whoopin.
How would you deserve an age group award if you didn't win your age group?
I proudly retain my trophy from the 1985 Budweiser Morehouse Relays, which has a Bud can between the base and the classic "runner" peak.
I'm over 40 and like to go to small local races for training runs. I've been known to drop out of 5k races 20 meters before the finish line just so I don't have to take the piece of crap trophy that I will immediately throw in the nearest dumpster. If it were something that I could use like cash, cash, or cash then I would finish and probably give a little better effort. I've also run in many races where the overall winner and the masters winner get the same cash prize amount but double dipping is not allowed. In those races I try not to win but only run as fast as needed to win the masters cash. On one occasion I won a 10k race by over 2 minutes and because the 2nd place guy wasn't over 40 they gave him the first place overall. It looked really stupid in the results. Races where double dipping is allowed I bust my ass to run as fast as I can. I like the races where if you are the overall winner or masters winner you don't get any trophy at all and I especially hate it when they want to give me two trophies. So double dipping is good for the sport if it is cash. Double dipping sucks if it is trophies.

What the f*** are you talking about, since when is there age groups in a PGA Tourney. When Jack, The Walrus, or any other old guy play in an open against younger players they are teeing off knowing they are playing for the same prize. There are no age groups in golf...different tours yes. What an idiot, I hope this isn't actually Eddy H posting this shit, but then who else know's more about $$ and how to gather $100 here and there.
You actually think that a few folks discussing their opinions about age group trophies and if some should double dip on a plastic piece of shit is what's keep our sport minor? If you do you are actually pretty stupid.
