Keino knew what it took:

Ryun ran most of his races like this one: sit back, move up and kick. I don't think he saw this tactic from anybody like Keino before...meaning anyone strong and talented enough to hold it and kick off a fast pace. Also, I don't think he was predicting a race like that for an oly final.
I wonder how fast Ryun's WR would be if he ran more even splits...
That London race puts a spin on the Oly final, assuming it was Ryun v Keino's last race before Mexico City. Keino sat behind Ryun the whole way and tried to outkick him. Did Jim expect the same thing in '68?
Keino was not only gifted, but a VERY cage racer/gamer. Liquori (himself a gamer/tactician) has a few choice words for him in his bio.
Ryun had one heck of a kick. Look how far back he was at 500m to go and tell me that any US miler today could have closed with those Germans. He might have run a faster time if he hadn't sat so far back, but I don't think Keino was going to be caught that day.
What are the best performances at altitude?
Has anyone made lists factoring in the altitude? I know that most of them are run in Kenya, but can somebody give me a link to the conversions charts?
If Keino's time really converts to a 3:45... that's extraordinary!!
