And if you want to argue about physical coordination, you obviously haven't seen speed (bullet or blitz) chess.

I think a really good indication as to why athletes in only rich television sports have a chance at winning Athlete of the Year is nobody even KNOWS any runners. In my young running days we all knew of Frank Shorter, Bill Rogers, Mary Decker and then Alberto Salazar, Joan Benoit, Lynn Jennings, etc. Recently a coach I run for, in deciding if a certain local race should continue to pay to bring in high level runners asked a group of High School runners about certain great American runners today. They never heard of any of them.
Now the people on THIS BOARD not-withstanding, nobody even knows who our top athletes are anymore in this sport. Huggs Becky
You've got it. It's name recognition they're after to please their audience. They don't care if Federer has a faster 40 time than Woods. If Harold Allen broke every Angling record, he still wouldn't be athlete of the year...ever.

very true. i am a runner but i also race motocross.
this past year Ricky Carmichael retired. he is a 15 time AMA (american motorcycle association) champion in motocross and supercross. he has never lost an outdoor championship, that\'s right..10 for 10. oh yeah, he also has two undefeated seasons. one of which was perfect.
but motocross is not mainstream enough to get noticed.
but he has dominated his sport like no other and as a result they call him GOAT (greatest of all time).

Tennis has a larger global TV audience than golf.
How can you say Tiger wouldn't be good at basketball. Have you seen him lately. He is ripped. He runs quite a bit and is in great shape. Tiger would be good at basketball and most other sports because he is an A-T-H-L-E-T-E. He is a natural, and I think could have succeeded in a very high level at baseball, basketball, or any other sport he devoted his life to. And, why is running the only TRUE sport? why isn't it considered a game. all you do is run in circles, and try to finish first. ANd another thing, how can you say golf is all technical and not athleticism? you could say the same about shooting or dribbling, you just practice technique, no talent required, right?
If any of you think Golf is a sport, you need to get off the drugs. Any game or activity that divides the haves and the have not is not a sport. It's a game rich men and a few rich women play at expensive country clubs because they don't want to be bothered with those who have less than they do.
Compare a round of golf to a race. What does a race set you back? Anywhere from $10-30 max normally. What's a round of golf. $50, 60, $100 even depending on your T-time? And what's up with these Golf carts. No real athlete would take anyone serious that would ride on one of those things and even consider themselves to be an athlete.
I'm not knocking the game. But that's all it is. A game. Not a sport. But I will knock on how some of those guys dress. Wouldn't catch me dead in some of those outfits.
how can u call running a sport? all u do is run! if ur walking around ur house, r u playing a sport? like cmon! how can running be a sport. it's an activity. it keeps u in shape, but sport? NO WAY!
...and the AP Female Athlete of the Year is a Golfer also.
No kidding:

I'm beginning to think that golf has a steroid problem. No wonder they can hit those 40' putts.
Then why do people get medals at the Olympics and Wc for this activity?

Tiger is even harder to beat in Match Play. i think he would have had a way easier time winning tournaments if they were all match play. Tiger just intimidates his oppenents, and he is obviously better.
That's why he does so well in Ryder Cup play - oh wait.......nevermind.
y do golfers get paid millions of dollars?
I agree, golf is a game not a sport. SI should only award Human sports which are
Human sports: T&F, PV, HT, DT, HT, LJ, HJ, JT, Sprints, Distances, Steeplechase, Ultra, XC, RR, Marathons, Basketball,Swimming, Volleyball, BMX, Diving, Boxing, Skiing, Ski Jumping, Wrestling, Judo, Ping Pong, Badmitton, etc.
These are fake, games, non-sports:
1) Steroid and Staged/Scripted sports: MLB, NHL, WWE, Bodybuilding, Cycling, MMA, Roller Derby, etc.
2) Games: golf, billiards, Nintendo, carems, luge, foos-ball, target shooting, bowling, bochy ball, etc.
3) Non-human sports: horse racing, dog racing, oock fights
Motor sports: NASCAR, Drag racing, motocross, F1, etc.
Tiger Woods celebrates kwanzaa. So does Brooke Shields.

That is by far the worst list I have ever seen. Why is BMX in "human sports"? No steroids in swimming or wrestling? No subjectivity in judo? And the simple fact that you included such obscure "sports" such as Ultra and Roller Derby yet failed to mention some of the most popular sports in the world such as soccer, tennis, and american football makes this idiotic.
Because Golf is promoted and marketed much better than running. Nike and Titlist make millions off of these top golfers (Woods, JD, VS, and whoever). What will they make from Lagat and company? Few people besides those who post on this board really see the joy of running. ALmost anyone can enjoy a game where they can ride in a cart to each hole. Even a 300 pound person can play golf. You're not going to see that same person running a 10K.

I said NAME recognition. It all amounts to how much tennis Federer is against how much of golf Woods is. Doesn't soccer have a greater global following than tennis? Why not choose whom they regard as the best soccer player?
Because soccer is a team sport, and head to head matchups between players/teams in different leagues are rare, also it is harder to objectively evaluate a soccer player's worth. That said, Ronaldinho should be near the top of people's lists, and for Zidane's WC he should be up there, unfortunately the headbutting incident hurts his image a bit.
Tiger is the face of golf, he has been around a bit longer than Roger, and has a more accomplished career. He is one of my favorite athletes (behind Roger) in all of sports, and I hope he breaks Nicklaus' record. I think Roger did more this past year to cement his place in tennis lore than Tiger did, but since Roger didn't get AOY it went (IMO) to the next most deserving.
I am guessing that Roger will be more than an even-money favorite to win the next major (Aussie Open), while the bookies will not have Woods more than even money at the Masters.
Yes, there is no steroid use in any of the "sports" you mentioned. Good call. If I had realized that the NHL was so full of steroid users, I wouldn't have wasted my time. Now that I know everyone in T&F is clean, I can sleep at night. And I can't believe you just said that diving, ping pong, and ski jumping are sports, but golf isn't.

I love golf. Tiger is the best in his field. Federer is the best in his field. Both require skill and finesse. Tennis is more demanding of fitness. Why don't golfers carry their own bags? I think golfers are overpaid? At least if they don't play well they are not going to make the big bucks unlike baseball players. I hate subjective titles such as this.
