Mexico would probably have been a bit better off if the US hadn't stolen half its territory. Of course, the US-Mexican War began because settlers in Tejas didn't like the fact that Mexico had abolished slavery, so they rebelled against the Mexican government, and cried to the US government to save them and their precious slavery, and thus began the war that would cut Mexico in half.

Funny thing is, your third-world comment applies to most of the world, not just those countries replete with natural resources like Mexico. Africa is third world, the Middle East can't get their shit toghether (amazingly with the exception of that small Democracy called Israel and some other up-and-coming MODERATE regimes), and with the possible exception of part of the Asian world (e.g. India), the only nations that have flourished are those "under the Queen" and others that have embraced economic, political, and religious freedom. But I suppose that's all America's fault. Funny how everyone still wants to come here and then feels emboldened enough to rip on America's intolerance, imperialism, greed, etc.

Mexico will never do anything about their plight as long as expatriots to the US can remit up to 1/3 of the country's total economic output back to their homeland. And I just read an op-ed in today's Investor's Business Daily about how our Federal goverment is making that process even easier for them. Sickening.

The US has no problem supporting autocratic regimes if they are in line with their needs. The US supprted the assassination of Salvador Allende because he was going to nationalize Chile's copper industry, but Pol Pot kills 1.7 million Cambiodians, and f***ing Vietnam has to shut him down.

First of all, aid to any country is often a poor idea, because it generally serves to prop up corrupt theocratic regimes, and gives little incentive to a country to actually modernize. Needy people tend to stay needy for a reason.

Secondly, it's not just about America's needs. Whether you like it or not, as America's economy goes, so goes the world's economy. And, unfortunately, oil is the lifeblood of that global economy. Everything is so intertwined now, that strategies of isolationism and protectionism do not work. Where diplomatic solutions fail, someone is needed to do the dirty work to make sure that the largest number of people around the world benefit ON AVERAGE.

I was not born here, but have been paying taxes for over a decade. I am a white boy, yet with my accent I'll never be accepted as an american. Of course a decade or two and in my home country they won't quite consider me local, either. This is just a price to pay, so whatever.

The earlier settlers hated the Irish masses who flooded here, and they felt precisely the same way about eastern europeans, etc. They passed laws to forbid chinese to immigrate.
