I do not remember where I read it, but he was quoted as having ran 7 miles seven times per week during the off-season. As I recall they were not LSD!

Rick himself in another thread corrected this to 4x400 cutting down from 52 to 49, with 45 sec recovery...still a monster session he only did a few times.
Didn't Centro have a similar session a bit slower to start with but for 5x400?

I feel better now.
I once did 4x400 on a hot summer night, at about 10pm, 400 jog walk, with each one under 51. I was 19, and for all intents and purposes, the rest period was damn near complete. Lol 8 mins or something. I was just screwing around. It was great to run fast workouts in the summer, hot nights. Just for the pure joy of running.
And Wohlhuter - absolutely a talent monster, and absolutely someone I idolized. Pre for the guts. Wohlhuter for the humility and mad talent.
Imagine what the guy could do today with training science and support.
Watching him run, what a thing of beauty he was. Totally his own style. Like Juanto, who was probably juiced but had his won style. Winning the 400/800 was insane.

Great post bro !
I wish Wolhuter would come on here .
He has no idea that old farts like myself idolized him .
There are many of us !!!!!!
His 1000m record is untouched decades later. Not much to improve upon w his training, apparently.
In the current era, he would be pressured to switch coaches, overtrain, run too much, too slow and never go < 1:43.
realize all the 143 guys back in the day were easily 142 in a monaco or retti.
i doubt anyone does 4 x 49 with 20 seconds recovery, what distance is that adaptation good for?
i gather the real deal is 52 finish in 49 with 40 seconds or so.
a variant would be to run a 52 sec 400m, 20 seconds rest and a running start 100m or 200 in 11, 23 seconds respectively. running start. you get the stimulus of running very fast after a quick quarter, i'd get the guy to do 400 plus 100m as bread and butter. maybe 3 sets max.
