We changed the title to make it more descriptive and to correct the misspelling in the initial title. It was initially titled, "Kieth Brantly record was good for 44 years
Did you run the TAC U.S. XC Championship 1989 in Golden Gate Park?
No...unfortunately...I think I was preparing for the Roadracing season...and I think that was around the time of Gasparilla and some other big races. Even though I finished 3rd at the World Juniors in Spain in 1981, Cross Country was not my first love; in fact...I sort of sucked at it. I have a bad ankle from a boating accident when I was 11 and uneven surfaces are not my favorite.
Nope...I'm good with Kelvin; it's basically the same when I was Freshman. At the NCAA's in LSU...1981....I was lapped twice....the eventual winner was 26. The rules are basically the same today as they were back then. Five of the top 8 were foreign runners. 10,000 meters 1. Suleiman Nyambui' (UTEP)............................... People call someone “racist” when they have no leg to stand on in an argument . You twist the age arguments into something different. Calling Rupp a product of “white privilege” gives insight to the jealousy that has overtaken much of your thinking. That you then go into a long diatribe about Haile - after making sure you earlier kissed the feet of some Africans to show your bonafides - says a lot. You’ve really gone downhill, you just can’t see it. Sure, I’ll get banned for having an opinion you don’t like, for truths you don’t like. We can all be sure that you banned the poster you attacked as well. The brojos need to stop the petty bans from being your best form of “defense”.
Rono was closer to 30 than 20 in college. He spent more time having beers in the local bars than he did in class. Talk about privilege. Hopefully the guys taking tests for him were paid.
Oh, its jealousy now? So its about me, not Keith Brantly, not those kids being cheated out of their rightful States championships by a documented fraud? I see clearer now.
You made it about you by bringing up yourself and complaining about Haile. Fair game.
That aside, I remember oll’ Haile and how many of my HS XC friends were laughing about his obvious lying.
Back in 1988 I went to Gainesville to train and escape the Michigan winter. Keith let me stay at his condo for a few weeks. Good guy. Very generous. The “real deal”. And not just in running.

You're now making it all about you by bringing up your HS friends and yourself? You're just bitter and jealous! Fair game right? Or maybe you're simply offended by the injustice of it all? I'm glad you're seeing my way. ;-)
I, personally, haven't found a legitimate gripe for the 25yo who broke Brantly's school record, since 25yo are permitted to run in NCAA.
High school participation is circumscribed by age everywhere, and Haile's case is the most egregious case of them all. [not including James Hogue] It was actual fraud. How many State titles were taken away from the legitimate winners? What were the names of all of those kids who finished 2nd?

That’s weak sauce. He tagged you. The “I know you are but what am I,” stuff is Armstronglivs level. More than a few people think Old Man Ches is right up there when it comes to age shenanigans btw. Maybe he is.
25 year olds shouldn’t be allowed to run in the NCAA. Let them go the club route.
Hey y'all. Started competitive running in 1975 and finished around 2002...so many changes in that time. We went from no monetary rewards allowed, to trust funds, to open prize money (Thanks to Anne Audain, Frank Shorter, Pre, and Jon Sinclair). Regarding foreign runners coming to the US...while I took advantage of racing road events that had American-only prize money, I did that to keep the lights on financially, so to speak. But even since High School, I competed against foreign athletes....Jack Buckner...now the CEO UK Athletics and I raced against each other at Florida Relays and a few other meets when the English Public schools toured Florida; he and some of the other guys even stayed at our house...the same year "Sultans of Swing" was released! So, from very early on, I recognized the importance of racing against everyone, regardless of nationality and age. Maybe I was too clueless to know, but I believe you can't become your best, if you're not competing against the best. Same when I was in college...UTEP, Washington State, East Tennessee, were all loaded with "mature" foreign runners, but I never bitched about older, foreign runners' eligibility. My roommate at Florida was 27 year old Junior, John Rogerson who had a Military exemption and a 1:02:00 half marathon to his credit. I always figured I'd be racing foreign runners after college so I might as well get used to getting my ass-kicked. While I had some good marks in HS, (4:15, 9:03ish) (14:18 for 3 mile cross), I wasn't a blue-chipper....but I truly believed in my primary goal of competing for the US in the Olympics. It took a long time to realize that goal, with a lot of self-inflicted failures. Bottom-line...my running career was an absolute blast. Despite being an over-confident, impetuous, braggart, douche-bag from time to time, I built great friendships. I trained with, and raced against some of the best; Salazar, Nyambui, Rob DeCastella, John Treacy, Craig Virgin, Gerard Donakowski, Spence, Eyestone, Centrowitz, Sr., Pat Porter, Bill Rodgers, Godfrey Kiprotich, Sammy Lelei, Tommy Nohilly, and many, many others. Had one post-collegiate coach, Dr. David Martin, for 16 years, and was supported by New Balance for 12 years (despite some epic failures on my part). By no means not a perfect career, but what a run. Hope everyone stays healthy and reaches their goals. Best...Keith
The world is small. Rob was my brother-in-law for a while. Moved to Australia and when the 3rd foot surgery stopped my running. One of my biggest memories was finishing in front of you in that terribly humid race in I believe 1994 when AB became a US citizen 24 hours before the race. You wouldn't know me i was there and gone very quickly. All the best!
What I want to know is how did you run a 28:31 10,000 at age 19 (frosh year)? That was really rarified air for a 19-year old back then.
In full-disclosure, while I ran that time when I was 19, I turned 20 in late May...and I was a Sophomore, not a Freshman. However, I did win the Penn Relays 10,000 as a Freshman....I think I ran 29:11....not too bad for an 18-19 year old. What really helped me, I had a teammate, Mark Sheehan, who was a 29:20 runner... and a workaholic. He was my mentor and he made sure I made every morning run, pushed me in workouts...and basically made my life miserable with respect to training ( I was sort of lazy.)
Still very impressive for a guy who “only” ran 9:03 in high school. Thanks for sharing.
Good to read about you on LR. I still think about those days at Winter Haven HS! Running through deep sand in the orange groves of Polk County as another poster put it. I’m still running - now in Boulder.

I dropped everyone but you with 5 laps to go in that race. You got me in the last 300 if I remember right. I think we covered the last 2K in under 5:20. That was a fun time.
I really don't understand why college doesn't age gate across the board. At the very least 20 for freshman, 21 sophomore, 22 junior, 23 senior. College basketball and XC/track can easily get ruined by this
