I think a lot of you people underestimate what kind of speed it takes to run 45.5 and especially 45.0. These are 21.0 / 20.5 speed requirements minimum
I agree with you. But let’s put him in some blocks w no wind or slight tailwind and full-on race atmosphere completely rested with no workout before. The kid could probably run 21.0 or a hair under. Eventually might go sub-45 as an adult, lol. Put him on the Olympic 4x400 already. Dude is Matt Boling 2.0, also from TX.

Look this is cool and Cooper is awesome, but this has to be one of the least surprising data points I’ve ever seen. Take the 800 and his age out of it, how could a 46.3 guy NOT be able to run 21.8? It’s impossible to only have a 1 second speed reserve, underdistance or not. I would imagine as other posters have said that he could probably go 21 low fresh. Unbelievable talent, but this is “duh” data
The 400 and 300 wouldn't be difficult. A speed-based 1:48 runner would be able to get that done, though the 200 would most likely be near 23.0.
That’s fair and a slower 200m would be fine considering what came before . Maybe add another 300m, first is a little slower maybe, also at 50flat 400m pace
Everything from his times so far to his overall frame indicate he's a legit 400/800 type. I genuinely think he could be a threat to the 500/600/800m all-time lists if he has any interest like Hoey's shown lately. I also believe sub-45 is probably in the cards soon if he keeps the speed work up. Very few 800m runners historically have documented sub-45 speed.
It also might just mean he’ll be a 44.5 / 1:40.0 guy

I feel like 44.5 would be enough to justify calling someone a 400/800 guy, even if they're better at 800s. A 44.5x would've been enough to get you to the 400m semis at Tokyo last year and I'd say that's pretty darn quick.

Granted it was from a running start, but I'd imagine if he hadn't done a workout prior to it, he could drop a 21 low, which would indicate 45 low 400 speed.
I'd imagine he's in mid 1:42 shape right now, though that's extrapolating a lot from a single rep.
HAHAHAHA 45-LOW YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS.
Rudisha was 45-low. CL is not. At least not yet.
This is what happens when distance runners try to talk about sprinting.
First of all, a decades-old rule of thumb is that a running start subtracts ~0.8s from a flat-start 100 or 200. (Bolt has run an 8.65 relay 100.)
So CL's "21.8" (even if timed correctly) shows more like a 22.6 FAT.
Let's generously imagine that he has 22.0 ability rested.
A typical application of the long sprinter's formula of 2x200 + 3s (again, generous) would bring his 400 to +/- 47.0.
If he races the event this summer, I'd bet he can break 47.0, and absolutely will not break 46.0.

Just FYI the kid officially ran a 46.30 (after running a same-day 800m) before he even broke 1:45. So that might be a data point worth considering here.

Right?
I like CL, but this is NOT impressive or surprising for a speed-based 1:42.2 runner.
As my post above shows, 21.8 rolling is something that a 46-high guy should be able to hit in workouts.
It also might just mean he’ll be a 44.5 / 1:40.0 guy

Why are we talking about 44.5 guys in the context of a 21.8 200m? That is 46.x stuff.

You're supporting my point, which is that 21.8 with a rolling start is normal for a 46.x runner.
It does not remotely show "45-low" ability.
Now, CL may have 45.x ability. But 21.8 isn't evidence of that. For a 45-low guy that should be any-day-of-the-week easy.
