There's nothing new about what the Hansons were doing, or double threshhold. I was doing double threshhold when I was in high school 50 years ago, when Marius Bakken was in diapers. I have no idea how you think bicarbonate or beet juice would help marathoners? The Hansons never had 800m runners as far as I know of.
I'm curious why you're so convinced that taking an extra minute or two of jogging between intervals is egregiously bad? If it worries you that much shorten the break. It's the least interesting thing about their plan.

The real critique of the philosophy is clearly the skew towards strength instead of speed/VO2 max work. Nitpicking an extra 50 meters of active recovery during a workout is bizarre. Just individualize it.
