The zone approach is misguided and simplistic for several reasons. RPE is superior but time dependent… Importantly here it is forgotten the MET component explains more variance than realized duration and volume different variables; also not all training was recorded. My sense is they forgot also to consider HRmax for the older athletes in the study which is often underestimated.
For anyone reading beyond visual abstract remember to consider R2 change and shrinkage in predictive statistical models and interpretations.These correlations are not additive.
In older athletes higher intensity exercise is highly predictive of longevity.And in younger athletes though heart volume correlated to VO2peak VO2peak is at best half the variance in performance Heart volume and contractility and blood volume are correlated but again R2 is certainly useful but not the total picture.
