Tuohy finished 6th today in the 3000m in 8:45.3, 10 seconds behind Hiltz who won in 8:34.98. Houlihan was 5th in 8:39.97. The only person Touhy beat whow I recognized was Eleanor Fulton who's not really been in contention for anything on the national stage of late. The result could be worse, but not particularly a promising start for the season compared to this group.
Why wouldn’t she stay in the NCAA? She hasn’t won anything yet. 14:44 is 46 seconds slower than the world record. She has a great set up now. Why waste her current opportunity?
Pro $$$$ is greater. But she’ll want an NCAA title I’m sure. Doris might only do Steeple outdoors, I don’t know her plans beyond that. Can’t see anyone but Doris beating Jane in the 5,000
Because you seem to be in the know, please tell us which banned substances the BYU runners are using as they abstain from caffeine, tobacco and alcohol.
Hutchins ran 8:44 so it wasn't like it was a slow heat either.
The way Hutchins is running, it makes me wonder if she would have made the difference at NCAA XC for BYU. BYU now has three runners qualified for USATF Indoor nationals (Hedengren, Chamberlain, and Hutchins), and two of them are qualified in two separate events.
Hedengren is an aerobic monster. No kick no leg speed. Her future 10000m marathon
Disagree. Her legspeed is pretty good (I bet sub-4 1500 happens outdoors), but if you hammer from the front you’re unlikely to have a kick. I think Monson/Valby notably are less speedy
Yeah, her leg speed is pretty good but she is definitely on the strength side for running the mile. She’ll never run sub-2:00 like Chamberlain has.

I thought they can have caffeine (eg soda) but largely just avoid coffee and tea. Something about brewed beverages

I don’t think BYU runners are doping but also don’t think the religion is the reason they’re not. There are plenty of people who don’t abide by every rule of their religion (and cynically there are some who use religion as a cover for dishonesty).

I would say that the religion makes it highly unlikely that they have a “doping culture”, which was the original accusation posted in this thread. That seems absurd. But might some of the athletes be doping as individuals? Of course, just like any other program. As you imply, people of every religion lie, cheat, etc.
(And to be clear I have no reason to suspect that anyone from BYU is doping, just saying that no religion or school is immune from that. It is always a risk.)
Nice kick. It was gutsy from Nielsen but it was hard to see her holding onto such a hot pace. Record is probably on borrowed time, though. If Jane stays in NCAA, it feels like sub-4:20 is in the cards.
You are losing the big picture. This is absolutely the correct way for Nielsen to run the race. Her stated goal is winning again at NCAA indoors. She understands the best way to accomplish that is to get strong enough to gap the field, just like she did last year with Ayildiz as favorite.
Hanging on to St. Pierre for so long is perfect toward that type of base. At NCAA indoors she'll be perfectly content to get into a slower paced race early then shoot clear and force Chamberlain to attempt to run her down.
If you’re insinuating doping, I think you need to check yourself and do a little self education. Many of the kids on the byu campus take their religion as seriously as many of us did in college chasing skirts and parties. They don’t stay out late, and many don’t even drink coffee or soda. They train at altitude amongst pros and with coaches that are a proven commodity. If you think any of these kids are using drugs, you need a good reality check.

....
I have been saying that for over a year, that the 10,000 will be her best track event. I'm sure Jane could run sub 30:45 right now on the outdoor track and sub 30:30 later this season easily!
An old rule of thumb for the men in the 28 minute era was double the 5000 time (29:29) and then add a minute, a bit more by up to ten percent. That yields 30:35. You are bang dead on.
