It was usually loud eight track music (country or rock... or southern rock)... followed by inaudible scream or shout... followed by object whizzing by your head.
I can relate to the bottle whizzing by my head. It came from out of no where and I turned around to try to find the person. It was a teenager who said nothing. Apparently he was not throwing at me. Yes, there are the sexual references, once a female said "nice package." Also, when I first lived where I live now people often tried to run me down with their autos. Now I run the same route and rarely get that.
Once I was running around the lake and a guy running the opposite direction yelled out and pointed to his shoes, "hey you should get these shoes!" (He did not look fast!)
Sometimes when I see a lone runner who is totally alone I will shout out, "You are way ahead, don't worry you will win this thing!" Of course I clap and cheer while doing this. I do not do this when I run, only when I am walking by.
I have had people drive along with me and scold me for running in the road, "I almost killed you because I did not see you, etc." But like I said that mostly happened when I moved to where I am. Now if I do see a car I dive onto the grass! (Just kidding, but I do bail out to the side, I am not taking any chances with these morons.)
It has been a while since I’ve heard it but was out on my Sunday long run and went past a group of teenagers exiting a music event. The comment - “Run Forest Run”. Was impressed they were familiar with the movie given it was an early 90s. Anyone else get this one or any others?
One time, (last XC season) the team I'm on was going for a hill session, and as we ran past a Safeway bus stop, we startled an older man, and he immediately responded with, "What in the Chariots of Fire?!"
I can relate to that. I too was a runner in Oklahoma in the mid 70's and had things thrown at me (verbal and the liquid kind in bottles) and cars try to run me off the very little edge of road I was running on.
In Fayetteville, a guy in a pickup came up behind our group, came across the road with a stick out the drivers side window and hit Niall O'Shaughnessy on the shoulder going about 40 or so. We all gave him the single finger salute. He turned around and headed right for us. Niall had picked up a big rock and proceeded to put it through his windshield. We made a beeline across an open field to get away!
As for verbal insults later in my running career, I was training in Phoenix. As a person with a very light complexion, someone yelled "get a tan." I had a good tan by my standards, but not by Phoenix standards. Oh well, he was right.,,,,,
I sometimes get the usual "looking good" and "good job."
But about 20 years ago when I was 55 years old, I was running along the bike path between Tahoe City and the Olympic Village along the Truckee River. There were bikers, walkers, rafters, and a few runners. As I was running up a small hill, a woman biking slowly coming towards me, surprised me with quite a compliment. "Thanks for the great view!"
Good thread. Depends on where I’m living. On college campus, it was unsurprisingly f____t. I have also had truck drivers “roll coal” on me twice while living in the South.
Some more pleasant interactions: UPS guy always honked 3 times when I saw on my daily route, “you look amazing!” From a grandma, a little boy tried to race me (I dropped him), fist bumps, high fives, etc.

So your 75 and can remember that one comment that long ago ? Impressive I am 62 and can barely remember last week.
On rare occasions, I’ve been verbally complimented by women on my bright new shoes or something, but usually I catch women quietly checking me out, which is especially funny when they are walking with their guy. I can’t recall men ever say anything to me while running, but I’ve been complimented in saunas or locker rooms at the gym where I go to lift.
Just remembered one time when a group of college age seeming girls walking from the other side decided to cheer me and all held out their hands for me to high five them. (I was just about to blow my nose and am glad I waited.)
Silly fun like the above even if a small thing instantly improves your mood.
in pei canada, on the beach boardwalk on the edge of town, on a warm summers day, i was topless, buff, the locals are fatFks almost all, lady say.s sarcastically, what are you trying to prove?
then at the gym, lifting, a group of real athletes, ripped are lifting and grunting, and several locals looked at them and complained they were making too much noise .... and management had a talk with them.
myself, i would have kicked out everyone out except the proper athletes, and crancked acdc.
at the same facility, on an indoor track, in my 50's, i am trying to do some 200's at 40 seconds, and ya, i got a talking to for running too fast ... i kid you not.
then at the beach sand dune running, the life guard comes up, and says you can't run there because i might damage the beach grass environment global warming type thing.
this was all in the space of a few weeks.
the next trip there, zero incidents, seems they cancelled wokeness or something.
