“I don’t care what you did yesterday. I don’t care what you did last year. I don’t care if you’re a world champion or an Olympic champion, it doesn’t matter. I’m here to win. I’m going to get on the line and think I’m the best. I don’t care what race it is or who’s in it”
Then bro gets 5th place at a normal competition pro meet. He needs to shut the f@ck up!
Running is a simple sport that nonetheless captivates like no other. Those athletes who win over the crowd usually do so with dominating performances or a lack of fear in their pursuit. Pre embodied this. Mythical determination. And a killer tache. Having followed Marco’s progression, I feel he embodies similar traits. Hope he has a real breakthrough this year. Any other athletes make you feel this way?
I think that he is the modern Pre. Much like Pre he wont stand on the top of a podium that matters in his whole career. By all means 4th in the Olympics is great.

what meet was he crying about losing an earring at? pre always seemed rather composed, more interested in expressing the body as art
I’ve spoken with people who know him, and apparently the guy we see in interviews is really just a character he puts on. Pretty smart move, since the real reason athletes get sponsored is for advertising, which comes through social media engagement.
I don't think that's true because I talked with someone who ran with him in New Jersey. He's always had a chip on his shoulder and was raised by a single mother after the dad abandoned them.
I don't think he's a good role model, because striving for victory and putting your all into the race doesn't mean you have to be miserable all the time. Not even Grant Fisher, Matt Centrowicz or Galen Rupp finished first in every race they ran, and if you can't appreciate noteworthy, what are you teaching others about how they should feel about their races.
The problem is him for being miserable all the time. Athletes need to have good mental health and a level of perspective of what they do.
But the problem is also you. 5th in a professional race and #4 all-time is insanely good. Based on his level of fitness, 7:32-7:33 was probably as good as he had in him
sans spring loaded shoes; plus the tracks are a F-ton better. Just Win Baby !
Don’t disagree with this- but even this resume pre-super shows and BU would make him a probably NCAA champion and seriously promising US prospect
Of course it would..and on the shoe and tracks issue..
The shoe improvements are clearly "baked in" now
Same with Track speedways
And, for the inflexible of watchers? Guys should be running way faster than 35-45 years ago, only in this sport do many seem to almost resent what should be expected progression over time, it happens in every other sport.

Marco grew up in a very wealthy town. He was a rich kid. This is a fact.
Tons of athletes also have personal struggles, they just don't cry about them in interviews about races.
He has the maturity of an 8 year old who just learned swear words and says them constantly to seem cool.

Completely inaccurate, not a rich kid by a long shot. And Bridgewater Raritan draws from a diverse background in its sending district. You have no idea what you are talking about. I could live without the constant F-bombs, but the rest of that post is inaccurate, tilted at best. There are wealthy areas in that District, and also a mixed bag of rest. Marco, has an edge to him, that seemed novel for a while, after the WHILE is now over, if I were advising, and no one had asked me, lol, nor would they. I would tone it down by quite a bit. There is a sector that does follow him for sure, and the schtick must appeal at a certain level. But, I know people who know him and pretty well, and those folks are friends of mine, I trust their instincts overall.
Bridgewater has some money, Raritan does not. Raritan is a bit scruffy. Raritan does have DeLucias, A great pizza place. David Portnoy gave it a very high score.

I ran against Marco in high school. I can confirm his family has a lot of money.

His family does not have a lot of money. Raritan is a working class town. The surrounding town-Bridgewater, Hillsborough, and Branchburg have some wealthy areas but not Raritan. You are just making up a story.

Nope!!!
Pre was a pioneer in American distance running. Pre was also authentic, and his racing style was indicative of his personality. He also, was instrumental in growing the sport world wide, and had a true passion to compete against the best. Marco is NOWHERE near anything Pre embodied and stood for. Marco is a great talent, and I look forward to seeing him evolve, but he ain't in the conversation with Pre. He's gotta a lot of work to do yet.

Marco needs guidance. The act was clever at first, but whoever is encouraging the constant “I’m the best, I’m above everyone, I’m not scared” routine is doing him no favors and actively hurting his image. At some point results have to match the talk, and right now they don’t. Has he actually won anything that justifies this posture? No. Confidence in this sport is earned, not declared. Until then, the formula is simple: stop talking, run fast, and let the performances speak.
