A good running friend passed away last month at the age of 70. Very good runner as an open and masters athlete. The cause was liver failure from drug and alcohol abuse. He retired late 50s and gave up running. It became apparent his behavior changed, which also had some influence on a divorce.
Another good friend, five years younger, punishes his body running when clearly it has some detrimental physical effects. I once told him the habit was cheaper than a psychiatrist. Now knowing his recent years’ medical bills I am not so sure.
At 75 I still train and race, within reason. As patriarch in our family, that role takes precedence over risky behavior. I have a new grandchild six months old, and hope I am around to see him graduate high school, perhaps beyond.
