Maybe no DQ but why the terrible tactics? he was in last off the line, went around the curve in lane 3 to get to the front, lead until 1100m, let himself get passed and stayed on rail, then totally boxed in for the last 150. move out on the backstretch at 250 if you have to.
hubris is bliss I guess.
strand also ran that heat like the NCAA final. hope he learned his lesson
how can people simultaneously be this clueless but also spending time at a place like Letsrun?
Hocker moving to the back initially and then moving up to the front 200-300m in is exactly what you should do when you are the fittest guy in the field. Guarantees you stay out of trouble. Obviously he should not have relinquished the lead with 400 to go, and he said as much after the race. Hocker is very tactically savvy, surprised people still don't realize that.
As for Strand, he just didn't have it. Wasn't a tactical issue.
It nullifies his entire strategy to give up his lead position on the rail like he did. If you give up position #1 and go backwards on the rail there is no end to how far back you can go if guys come past on the outside and he went too far back. If he was the fittest guy in the field he needed to either execute that strategy completely and hold his #1 position or execute a different one. It wasn't savvy.

If Cole is not getting a deserved DQ here then what is the message for every mid- and distance event runner from this point onward? That was awful, unsportsmanlike, running unless we are moving to a more Mad Max inspired model.
If he is not DQ'd then someone must be hoping that Americans tune in to see Hocker, which for me is far from the truth.
The message is “if you thread a needle in a race and make minor contact it’s ok” .
