As a college coach, I am always paranoid that I am going to do something like this coach did and so far I have been lucky. It would be easy to accidentally click on the wrong button, but I always make sure I double and triple check everything like this, especially if it is a regional or national meet. I definitely feel sorry for both the coach and the athlete and I am sure the coach feels horrible.
As a proud alumnus of Carnegie Mellon (with a BS in Information Systems, a BA in Communication Design, and an MS in Information Systems Management), I can tell you that RaceberryJam is pretty much the most poorly designed, illogical, and unusable system for handling major meets that I have ever seen. I do not understand for the life of me why the NCAA continues to use RJ, particularly when events like this occur which can at least in part be attributed to the poor layout and usability of the site.
I don't want to shift the blame onto anyone; I don't think really anyone is to blame in this situation. I was just discussing it with my friend, thinking aloud how I would have reacted if Coach Donatelli had entered me in the 200m instead of the 400m last year. I would have been absolutely destroyed. So please, help Nick if you can.
