Before carbon plated shoes, I was in a never-ending injury cycle (went 8 years without ever getting a run of more than 9 months without an injury). They always tended to be lower-leg issues; plantar fasciitis, achilles tendinopathy, calf strain, etc.
For the past 3 years I've worn carbon-plated shoes for every single workout and I've not been injured since.
We are beginning to see many problems from Achilles to plantar fasciitis that are being caused from patients that are doing a large percentage of their training in carbon plated racing shoes. Carbon plated shoes should be used as often as you would have used spikes in the past.
The amount of downvotes to this is laughably concerning. I don't know if you are a podiatrist or not - I don't think thats the point because you aren't wrong.
Our bodies were created and evolved to be able to do almost any motion (including running) without anything supplemental. We need shoes to protect ourselves from stuff we as a species have made (like hard asphalt).
Modern, hyper-cushioned footwear are overriding our bodies natural cushioning mechanisms and removes the need for the body to move and support itself the way we were created to (a harmonic combination of ligaments, tendons, muscles, cartilage etc).
Go watch these stupid youtube shoe reviews where people put these shoes and sink into the heel to show the shoe compressing 10-15mm - does this really look like it's good for you? And some of these comments defending the prolonged and consistent use of these products? Good god.
You know road races are run on this stuff right?
It doesn't matter how "in touch with nature" I become, I'm still gonna have to race a marathon on tarmac/asphalt. So I might as well run on the stuff - and enjoy myself while doing it.
So besides minimalist shoes, what are decent available shoes that have the new foams without the high stack. Would you recommend something like the Aspics Hyperspeed as less shoe allowing the achilles to function normally while maximizing the tech gains from the new springyer (did I just make up a new word?)foams?

The plate is largely irrelevant. It's not doing what you probably think it's doing anyway. You can basically get stable, plateless super foam shoes now if the plate is some sort of scary thing.
The foam is the all important bit. I ran an experiment a while back where I ran a whole week again in my low mileage fresh) hoka Rincon 3s and Clifton 9s. It was laughable how trashed my legs were in comparison by the end of the week. Probably another 1/2 points on the RPE scale at times and my legs progressively even after a few days stopped feeling as fresh. Who cares if my legs don't have to work as much, is not like when I then race I'm gonna suddenly run barefoot.
The remarkable part of shoes is how much PEBA and TPU foams can nurse or baby the legs, even without the plate. Shoes like the superblast, evo sl , triumph 22 are lightyears ahead of EVA shoes. It's just progress. It's probably as important what they are doing now with these daily/workout shoes as it was when the first carbon plated race shoes came along, in terms of being able to do higher mileage with lowered risk.
People will always get injured running, it's confirmation bias usually to just associate it with a new pair of shoes.
I actually use carbon fiber plated shoes to treat my running patients with hallux limitus/arthritis, neuroma, plantar fasciitis. They also help patients run with Achilles tendinitis due to the rocker geometry especially if the rocker starts further back in the foot.
some carbon fiber plated shoes actually simulate the function of a CAM walker boot with the rigid rocker sole.
As long as you do foot strengthening exercises as part of your overall strength training regimen, your feet and legs won’t decondition.
From an Outside article I just clicked on: "While no studies to date directly demonstrate that supershoes cause injury..." It cited a lot has what been said. It's easier to run in super shoes so you're not getting muscles working as hard. They affect form. Etc. But they can't link those things to an uptick in running injuries so I stopped there.
The reality is that running can cause injuries for a # of reasons. I also think more people have access to PTs/chiros so maybe more people are getting diagnosed with running injuries but it's likely those injuries were always there/just went untreated/undiagnosed. There's better reporting today than there used to be.
Outside magazine sucks. Your should be ashamed of yourself. not a credible source

Paul, you know NOTHING about running mechanics or the modern shoe.
If you are not a natural "responder" then you must do ALL your running in plated shoes.
You can't switch between traditionals and plated; it will just bugger you up. Most run differently in the traditional VS the plated. Most don't run near as much forefoot in the traditional. You would just bring bad habits from the trad to the plated.
Why are Masters runners not knocking it out of the ballpark with race results? Because they had a lifetime of emphasizing running economical.....shuffling even. That doesn't cut the mustard with the plated shoe.........but it sure does cut the cheese.

Are there any rocker shoes you like in particular for patients with achilles pain?
