And keep in mind that many guys guys running a minute slower than him are also running 120-150 mpw. Maybe if they were running less they might be running 27:37. What is it with everyone thinking everyone has to do really high mileage to reach their potential. So many runners probably underachieved becasue they did TOO many miles. It happens. There are some very gifted people that can not only excel doing lower mileage, they are probably running better than if they did higher mileage. Different things work for different people. Also, I know very, very, very few runners that don't exaggerate the mileage that they run. The person that had a couple of hundred mile weeks in a given year, but really averaged around 80 for the entire year, still tells everyone he runs a 100 miles a week. But everyone on Letsrun believes every single thing they read, as long as it fits in with their belief. If they are a high mileage believer, they will believe anyone when they say they are doing high mileage, but they won't believe someone saying they are doing lower mileage. Just the opposite happens as well, where the low mileage believers only believe the quotes that "prove" their philosophy.
There are many, many ways to train people and what works for one person, may not work for another. Accept that fact, figure out what works for you and get back to training.
