Because track races are ****ing anxiety-provoking. This is one of the main reasons why I kinda stopped racing later in life. The mere sight of a track makes my heart beat faster.
She has severe anxiety about racing. I could tell this over the last couple of years while watching her interviews. She might be the best in the world, but it doesn't change how she is. I think the over thinking about each race and the pain that comes with it as you approach the start line is a huge issue for her. I assume that is why they are doing low-stress races to get her comfortable and enjoying the sport. Just my prediction. I have dealt with this in the past myself and it can be extremely over whelming.
.... Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone experienced it at her first major championship at age 16 and admitted she purposely underperformed. In 1991 having never run high school track, I TRANSFERRED to a college and walked onto the #1 track team in the world. My first indoor race I was for 600 of the 800m race and I was destroying the 800m NCAA indoor runner-up. I was on pace for a sub1:45 indoors. I heard someone say, "he's not supposed to do that". I slowed to a jog and lost all confidence.
An athlete's mentality is MORE important than their physical capabilities. I continued to demolish NCAA scorers in workouts where there was no pressure but never raced to my potential in competition. Athing maybe SUFFERING lack of self belief just as it hindered my short career.
Most people have anxiety because well...they are not that talented.
Mu is probably the most talented runner in the USA in generations (male or female). Assuming she actually marginally trained, she could enter 99.99% of 800 meter races and blow out the field. Sure olympic finals may cause stress so that once every 4 years. But otherwise i don't buy the stress unless she isn't training which is likely the case(she's stressed because she didn't train)

HUGE difference between being a 16-yo high school student in the Olympics and a 22-yo Olympic/World Championship gold medalist running in a three-person race at Cal State-Los Angeles against two people who can't even break 5:00 for 1500m.
She has been winning age group titles long before she got to High School, Likely running/competing since age 8-10, Why would Anxiety with racing just suddenly appear?
She had a very good youth club coach and obviously the coaches at Texas A&M were very good for her. They prepared her well in training and also set her competition schedule.
Now she has that nut job Kersee and she follows his lead.
I think she either needs to change her coach,or retire. If she retires she will have nothing to prove,as she's won olympic and world titles. Its clear she doesnt enjoy running anymore.

on a hot day at the track, i have this phobia trigger, it sucks, un resolved fear, i suppose at some point we have to perform when we don't want to, really, psychological damage.
on the other hand, it i have a big pressure situation coming up, i feel like warming up, stretching, and go in there fully charged, which is automemory traning from back in the day. in this case, the overall experience is dope, where a bit of fear supplies juice.
with Mu, she overcame everything, and might have been traumatized by expectations and forcing, where prior it was all her idea. i understand this.
these days there is great knowledge out there to unravel how your mind works and get on with your beautiful god given activity less moronic monster ideas that live in your, our heads.
the great Herb Elliot, Snell cut it short for precisely these reasaons.
so lay off Mu, in this regard. go after coach and stupid PR however,
I think the problem is that her name is athing. She's not a thing. She's a human. It should be illegal to give your child a name that dehumanizes them.
It may even happen on LRC forum to find knowledgeable content:
You won't have to wait any longer folks, I am Jieng/Dinka like her. And a nerd while at it. The correct spelling is actually Athieng Mou. Athing Mu is an American corrupted spelling of Athieng Mou. Her names start like this, Athieng Deng Tong Mawien Mou. The spelling in Dinka language (Thongjieng) is: Athiɛ̈ŋ Deŋ Tɔŋ Mawiɛ̈n Mɔ̈u. Here are the meanings: Athieng in Dinka refers to a cow with a grey-brown shade. This cow is named as such because those colours resemble the colours of a Tiang antelope ( Google Tiang). Tiang is so typical to South Sudan that the Dinka word, Thiang, is the scientific name for this specifies of Antelope. Google Tiang migration. Athieng simply means Tiang-coloured cow. Her dad either paid an Athieng cow as part of his dowry or if she was named after one of her grandmothers, then one of her grandfathers down the lineage had an Athieng cow as part of his dowry. Mou literally means alcohol, a type that is specifically brewed traditionally in Dinkaland. There is a specific story to that too. Deng means rain and it is a name that is passed on from grandfathers. Tong means - war or spear Mawien comes from wien which is a rope used to tie down cows in a cattle camp (see images of Dinka cattle camps on Google) A big chunk of Dinka names are derived from cow colors or interrelation of colors on a cow. And those color names are in turn derived from animals that have similar shades. Note that I explained just her first 5 names, the concept of fixed last names does not exist in our culture. Your names are a chain of your ancestors' names. Her full name is more than 10 names-long (my count goes to 14). But in the West, we are forced to adapt to Western last name conventions. Therefore, she is using Mou as her last name but it is actually the first name of her great great grandfather. We are patrilineal.
This reminds me of Rocky 3, where Rocky is beat by Clubber Lang & he has lost all his confidence. Maybe Keely can show up at her club one day, and they can train & race together for fun, until she gets her love of running & competitive spirit back
Imagine Steph Curry, or Patrick Mahomes refusing to play or michael phelps refusing to swim because they got annnxxxioussssss. get a sports psychologist and get on the starting line jfc, absolutely embarrassing from a gold medalist
Well, he didn't refuse to swim, but he suffered from serious mental health issues and it affected his performance.
