In the 800m, speed = potential. It is the ultimate limiting factor. Yes there is a huge endurance component but that is much more trainable.
The fact that no one has ever done it before doesn't mean that it can't be done. IMO, The reason it hasn't happened yet is because nobody has attempted it. Nobody who is a sub44 quartermiler is realistically going to step up and dedicate five years to an 800m record, so we haven't seen it yet. But that's what it will take for the sub-1:50
great point. Didn't like some of the greatest highschool milers defy their coach's wants by training for the mile instead of running the 400 even though they had good 400 speed? So, I mean, you're right, it'd just take someone who was good at the 400m to move up and train for the 800m. That'd be a really hard choice to get them to make probably, but there would be so much more potential.
