Obviously if someone digs up some ancient thread claiming Aouita is the best from 800 to 5000, I'll correct them that 800+ GOAT is Augustine Choge.
800: 1:44
1500: 3:29
3000: 7:28
5000: 12:53only event where Aouita was significantly faster was 800. 1500 they're about even, Choge better at 3000 and 5000, plus
HM 59
No chance Aouita could ever have ran a 59 HM. Neither ran a sub 27 10,000 but Choge would have if it weren't a dead event when he started moving up.
Notice served to all future "Aouita range GOAT" thread bumpers, I've got you covered, don't bother.
Ovett ran 1:44.0 when the world record was 1:43.4
Ovett ran 1:05 when the 1/2 marathon world record was 1:02
Choge ran 1:44.8 when the world record was 1:40.9
Choge ran 0:59.3 when the world record was 0:58.2
Yes, EPO changes everything regarding 'range'.
Ovett ran the 1:05 1/2 marathon on a day's notice after a mile race was cancelled, and in borrowed trainers that left him with blisters half way through. He jogged with the leaders until the very end when he sprinted away and won by 23 seconds. Among those he beat, if I remember correctly, was NIck Rose, who would go on to run 1:01.
BTW, Choge ran his 1/2 marathon pb 8 years after his 800m pb. Ovett ran his 1/2 marathon pb the season before his 800m pb, and the season after he reached the 800m final in Montreal.
