if webb intends to be a 'world class miler' as in, in a position to win a title, he's got to do something with that 146 800m best
otherwise, follow the example mottram has set (who has run under 28min for 10k btw)

Nevertheless, he beat Lincoln in that race. Lincoln, as you will recall, was a D1 Outdoor 10K National champion just a few months prior.

If Webb is going to run this thing all out I see Ritz winning in 27:20 or so and Webb right about 27:30. Ritz will run a big PR and be in the vicinity of the AR, but no one will care b/c it's more impressive for a 1500m runner to run that fast. It would be like Ritz moving down to the mile and running 3:52 and losing to Webb.
The only American who has run sub-3:55 and sub-28:
Pre.
5-6 is more than "just a few".
So remind me again what distance Webb is best at? mmmkay.
and to the guy who brough up Webb's 800 PR, why not run some 800's instead of a 10k to work on the speed? Maybe he's trying to follow Mottram's lead, but as I stated earlier, I'm sure this 10k is just to test his strength being early in the season and all. I don't see him as a 10k guy.
Everyone is right on about Webb throwing in a 10k this early in the season to test his strength and aerobic fitness; something a la Mottram. Do remember though that he did run impressively for 9k and ~ 11k in a couple of Spanish cross country races. He deffinately worked on his strength and aerobic base in the "off-season", and even if he did lose 8 pounds from a stomach virus in a matter of weeks, I'm sure he didn't lose all that aerobic and strength base. On the other hand, if Webb finished with a 13:10 at the end of last summer, I don't see him being in faster-than-13:20 shape right now, which would probably mean that he's not in faster-than-27:45 shape. If Webb runs this race, I'd be looking at Abdirahman, Ritzenhein, and Webb running somewhere between 27:30 - 28:00.
where's the link to this article that implies Alan will run a 10000m? In response to why doesn't he run the 800? Simple Alan Webb according to an interview he says he want to be the strongest 1500m in the world. His goal is to be strong enough to close in his words like El Guerrouj. Did El Guerrouj ever run any 800m's?
umm and Bob Kennedy...

Hasn't Culpepper run 3:54 and 27:33?
who has ever gone sub 3:50 and sub 28 though?
i think alan webb will be the first american.
Culpepper 3:55.12 27:33
Kennedy 3:56.21 27:37
Cummings 3:37.6 1500 27:43
McChesney 3:56.36 27:47
Hill 3:56.41 27:56
why don't you post their 1500m times, those are more indicative of sub3:55 mile.

Because you are wrong, child.

Steve Scott could have done it, but I'm not aware of a 10k he ran (someone else will know). His 5kpr was around 13:30.
no you just dont want to post the FACTS that would prove you wrong friend.

I'm not so sure that Scott could have done it. The longer the distance, the less competitive he gets. The same cannot be said of Webb at this point.

You're a typical Letsrun idiot.
Cummings 3:37.6
Kennedy 3:38.32
Culpepper 3:38.64
Hill 3:39.85
McChesney 3:40.0

Could be! Looks like he ran his mile pr in '82, 5kpr in '87. We know he ran a lot of miles....somehow I think if he'd run a 10k in his prime, he'd have gone under 28:00...but we will never know for sure, I guess..
