I work in academia and am honestly a bit intellectually conflicted on this story. On one hand, I have for years hated the chilling effect of students/professors limiting free speech to fit a preordained political agenda (one in which I sometimes agree with and sometimes do not). Universities should be places where people wrestle with complicated and conflicting ideas and viewpoints, and as such, being in adult movies--as long as they are not being foisted on students or coworkers--should fall under free speech, which should always be sacrosanct in the university environment. Amy Wax, as grotesque as I find her opinions, has a right to them. Just as hardline anti-Israeli academics--who I vigorously disagree with--have a right to speak out on their politics.
On the other hand, I can see no way forward for this man to do his job. Chancellors are public faces of universities and their role for public universities, in particular, carry great political and social weight. The sometimes are go-betweens for the university and the state political system. Whatever I may personally feel about his personal life being separate from his professional, there is simply no universe in which I see him navigating the public sphere without this story trailing him, and thus, causing material harm to the university he represents. I wish Americans weren't so freaking all-or-nothing about things--but we often are, and as such, I can't see how we could continue his job and what it requires.
Great thoughtful comment.
I think in a few years these personal sex videos will be just a fairly normal thing. Some people will do some, others don't. Just another form of social media.
