14 hours is a lot. Where did you get this figure from?
Is it just a figure you've picked out of the air or did you read it somewhere? Did you sleep for 14 hours a day on a consistent basis before and feel better? Run better, train better and race better?
I could understand someone saying 10 hours but 14 hours is a large chunk.
Also, I see you're asking about how to get the extra six hours of rest without sleeping, so I suppose you could just buy a nice comfy mat or inflatable and chill out on that on the floor while watching nature documentaries or something.
You can't be serious with the 14 hours of sleep per day requirement to improve. Last time I slept that amount I was a baby. Need at least 21 hours of sleep per day.
All the trolls on this thread most likely never tried running 120 mile/ week, also never had a real job.. and certainty wouldn’t have the balls to do both at the same time.. idk if 14hrs / night is this guys’ key to 2:10 but all these jealous softies tearing him down is exactly why this sport isn’t doing well right now. Not that message board trolls ever gave a crap about real performance in the 1st place.
I wish the guy good luck. Everyone have different recovery rates.. keep that iron in check and nutrition good and see if you can sling a few naps per week especially after your long run days.. MWLR included. May never get to 14 but hopefully it’ll pay off when you approach race day.
this message board is the wrong place to ask for advise, kids still living in the place they were brought up in don’t know much about elite marathoning.. just how to criticize it from their phones while eating pizza rolls.

Idk man, I thought I gave him pretty good advice about more sleep before midnight being worth double after. Do professional runners who have run 2:10-2:14 seriously sleep 12 hours overnight and take two hour naps? I doubt it.
I got up to 120 mpw with a full time job (well 9:00-4:00 but I worked through lunch) and still found time to train and make it to the chiropractor a couple times per week (this was a guy focused more on physical therapy and strength training), and have a social life. I probably got 9 hours sleep every night and only napped on the weekend.
14 hours per day just seems like a lot and maybe not necessary. Even 10 hours overnight is a lot. Ron Clarke ran three times per day, had a full time job, and had a family. Wasn’t ideal, but he made it work.
Idk how you got that I said he needs 14.. just that getting closer to having more rest if he felt he needed it..
I also wasn’t saying anything about your advise as it’s apparent you went trolling him..
..Obviously this guys’ not Ron Clarke or Dick Beardsley Type .. if he were he would be on here searching for advise, he’d already be a 2:10 marathoner..
The truth is we didn’t know what this guy did for work and if it taxes him to the point that he feels like more rest is necessary, then he’s either gotta find a way to get it or find a different job that’s less intense which isn’t usually an option if you need a career to fall back on which looks like he defiantly might.
I run 120 miles per week. I only get 8 hours of sleep due to job. My body really needs 14 hours of sleep per day (12 overnight; 2 hour nap between runs). If I got 14 hours per night, I think I would improve from 2:14 to 2:10 and get UK funding.
Any tips to get my body the extra 6 hours of rest without actually sleeping?
I was around this level pre super shoes working full time. Averaged about 7 hrs of sleep a night. That you need 14 is absurd. If you want it sack up. That's my advice.
I hate to say it but he's right... I always wonder about these sub-elite athletes. All the same sacrifices as the elites - but a 2:14 marathoner has nothing more to show for it than a 3:14 marathoner. 10 years later and you'll be talking with your co-workers and someone will say "oh, you ran a 2:14... that's pretty good..." But you could sub in a 3:14 or 4:14 or 5:14 and the comment would still be the same (as in feigning being impressed but they really don't give a sh!t about your 2:14, much less have a sense for whether that's actually good or not).
For the record, I'm a 2:57 marathon runner... and I keep having to remind myself not to take it too seriously. the 40 miles/week I ran to achieve a 2:57 is fine. If I doubled or tripled my mileage, it would severely interfere with my family life, career and any free time I have... and for what? To maybe break 2:50?? Not worth it.
Trust me, you’d feel differently if you ran 2:14.
Nah, don't think I would. I know a 2:10 guy... I honestly wouldn't trade places. He's essentially a semi-retired athlete and current social media influencer now... no thanks. If I had Kipchoge's talent, that would be another story.
