What I don't get is the constant "she wanted to test what it was like to go out at WR pace" nonsense. As the saying goes, there is more than one way to skin a cat. Just because Koch ran her opening 200m in 22.4 and hit 300m in 34.1, it doesn't mean McLaughlin has to go out at a similar, suicidal pace. She can go out at 22.9 pace, and believe me the difference between that and the 22.69 in Paris make a HUGE difference in the latter half of the race.
I've no doubt it provided important information for Kersee, but I echo other posters in that you cannot just compete 3 or 4 times a year and expect to execute your race perfectly in an event like the 400m.
Was it a good opener? Time-wise, yes, of course it was. Performance-wise, absolutely no it was not. You don't test WR pace in an event you haven't run competitively for years in your opening race, at a DL meet at that. This was her first serious race in 11 months (chuck that stupid 60m nonsense in the bin, that was to meet contractual obligations). Do it at a sh*tty local meet in the US, you know, the ones she usually runs in with zero competition. Don't insult the fans & DL promoters with a training test.
Kersee is off his rocker sometimes. And more fool her for blindly believing him & following him. (I've always wondered what how her faith allows her to work with such a notorious coach too, but that's another topic..)
