Ok so I finally got the video uploaded of this.
30.75 inches in the standing vertical jump at 5'11 and 217 LBS. The first jump was the PR. The second two jumps were around an inch lower. But both of those were still higher than my previous PR that took me years to get.
I stood under the hoop and measured exactly 24.25 inches from the top of the rim. I then jumped 6.5 inches over the top of the rim. Previous PR was 28.5 inches. And previous PR before that was 26.5 inches.
My best from 2009 till 2020 had only been 24.5 to 26.5....
This is getting crazy for me. Improving my vertical has been one of the most diffulcult things for me to do. I'm literally always getting like 1 inch below my previous PR of 28.5.. So 99 percent of the time out of the year i'm doing around 26 to 27.
All of my calculations are adding up finally. I knew that I would continue to recover from distance and gradually get stronger well into my 40s, I just didn't know where the cutoff point would be at, the point where I just got too old to improve.
And this past week I did 360 for 3 on bench equivalent on the smith machine. Meaning 210 on the smith for 3 with one arm.. Bar weighs 30 so it was 180 of real weight for 3 with one arm. Which was really easy. Felt like I could have gone to 370 for 3. My PR in that is 375 for 3 from last summer. So looks like I should be close to a bench PR as well. With a bounce though. Not paused. Still getting close to PRs for me on that even with the bounce.
The temp in the store was only 71. And I didn't do my standard 8 by 35 yard dashes before doing this. Usually after doing 8 by 35 yard dashes I broad jump the best. And I need hot temps to get my broad jump near PRs. So I don't know what I can do in the vertical now if I do it in the right conditions of 93 degree temps and high humidity and after doing 8 by 35 yard dashes.
Also I don't know how this compares to an NFL combine vertical because it seems like it would be easier to try and jump up and move one of the levers so that I have a point to go for. Seems like I could get a bit more on an NFL combine test. I really need to get one of those NFL combine vertical devices. But they are around 650 dollars I think. Which sucks.
Also another slight factor going against me was that I was wearing cargo shorts. Probably not much of a difference there though.
But I don't see any reason why I couldn't get 31 or 32 on this given the right conditions..... The heat, humidity, after doing the standard 8 by 35 yard dashes to fully warm up, and in just spandex shorts...........
Also someone mentioned something about jumping shoes. I'm going to have to see if there are any shoes out there that could give me any type of advantage in this. Like a quarter to a half inch is all i'm asking for. But damn. I can't believe I got this.
I've been doing this one hip speed squat thing at the gym and that seems to be working really good. I'll post a video on what that looks like later.
I'll have to see what this does to my times on the track in the 10,20, 35, 40yds, and 60 meters. Not doing anything over 60 this year. Have been doing that since 2015.
One thing I think I can work on more is throwing my hands down faster. So i'm going to do banded throw downs as fast as possible to work on that. And more lat pulls. I need to get my lats stronger. My upper back and lats really aren't that strong due to the distance. Never really had time to develop them.
I'll write more about this later. But this is good enough for right now. All time PR and i'm so pumped up about this right now due to the diffulculty level for me in improving this by literally anything at all.
