I heard a discussion on a podcast about this very topic and how going to the well isn’t always a good thing and could actually shorten one’s career. Not sure my stance, but cant argue that he seemed to channel his inner Ritz in that one.

The hosts went on to question whether Jim Ryun would have it in him to push that hard in his upcoming bid for history and, after much back and forth, agreed that the Ritz trained, super spike wearing, 75 year old miler likely would have the muscle memory to go to the well, but only after a few rust busters due to his 50 year layoff from competitive racing.

Excited for the comeback races and to see him loping around the BU track soon.

From studies done on boxers and race horses, you are only capable of a couple all-out efforts in a season. Obviously, you physically try push yourself as hard as you can in every race, but in reality, you are operating less than 100% because you can't give the same emotional energy to every race. As a long-distance runner, I don't think you can go the well more than 2-3 times in a season. What you plan for is for those 2-3 times to happen in a national or global championship.

Somewhat valid but that postulate is skewed towards longer races, especially the marathon and applies less at 3k and 5k distances. Klecker will be fine. ...and probably faster than ever later this year. The absence of Fisher in indoor season should offer a good comparison later, especially vs Kincaid's racing frequency and success indoors so far.

Going deep is a benefit and will have made him a better runner. Provided he recovered properly it will have served him well.

Was Klecker really in extreme distress after the race? Was it a Salazar after 82 Boston moment? Do you recall Hassan after the 10 in Tokyo? She looked like she was going to die too. Hassan was fried for the next year and a half because of her efforts in Tokyo, so there is such a thing as pushing it too far both physically and mentally. In the Olympics or at the close of a marathon major to win, it’s epic bravery, but if you do it at BU in January, it’s dumb.

Those things go hand in hand. Race motivation is as both physical and mental.

OAC athletes go really hard in January and Feb and we all get super excited about it, as we should. Unfortunately, I remember last year the same thing only for all their athletes to fizzle by world indoor. Same thing happens in the spring into summer.

I’m down for it no matter. Keeps me interested year around. Always someone killing it out there. Klecker is a joy to watch. Always leaves it all out there.

Klecker hasn’t run an equivalent race since, looks like the OP may have had a point despite the drama.
