Hasn't Valby been running faster and winning by larger margins?
Yes, she has, but on different courses. Times and margins from one course can't be compared to time and margins on a different course. Only in track is that comparison somewhat valid.
There is some validity in comparing times and, even more so, in comparing margins of victory.
It seems Valby has been consistently 1/2 minute plus faster on 6k courses and has crushed her opponents earlier, easier, and more thoroughly.
I have been pulling for Tuohy but recognize the likelihood it will be Valby
Really enjoying following the women’s division this season, feels very competitive and interesting moreso than the men’s. To answer the question, I’m a Tuohy fan but one cannot discount Valby’s 2nd place 5,000m finish off of minimal training and her stellar fall XC season. I may have to give the edge slightly to Valby over Tuohy. Happy with either one winning, tho!
They mean ’minimal’ in terms of the typical run training on ground.
However, look at what Allie Ostrander said in her latest video regarding her cross-training when she got injured with a stress fracture in March 2019, prior to the June Oly Trials on the track: the first six weeks was 2hrs of cross training everyday, with intense intervals and workouts practically everyday.

Edit: I think I got the months right, but the wrong year.
Tuohy will easily put her away. She hasn't been trying all season. S/O to Valby on a great season but KT is just on another level that I don't think anyone else in the NCAA is on right now
I don't think NC State risks KT going out with Parker and blowing up. The women's team race is so tight (they literally tied New Mexico at Nuttycombe) that the risk/reward just doesn't make sense (especially if she's slightly nicked up). 18 months ago at NCAAs at the same course, she went from 7th to 24th in the second half of the race. They've played things very safe with their women so far this season. No reason to believe they'd risk losing a team title by a few points when KT could run with their 2-3 to solidify the team race. Valby and McCabe in front of her don't have any bearing on the team race. Tuohy will have 2 more years to chase individual titles. NC State puts the "pack" in Wolfpack this weekend and focuses on taking care of the team race.

They will want to have Chmiel and Tuohy go with the top ALA and OSU ladies. Bush and Seymour should watch the NM ladies. 5-7 should run together targetting 45th.

Nah, I think both Tuohy and Chmiel will be in the lead pack with Valby, McCabe and the OSU and Alabama runners. They will work together as they have all season. Both have run this course before and have run in tough weather conditions for years and will be prepared. I find the KT injury talk very strange too. She closed the last 2k at Regionals in 6:08 which is pretty quick especially for someone supposedly injured. Unless more credible evidence is presented - seems to me like these “reports” are just the latest trolling efforts.

This is the 2nd time someone has mentioned “minimal training” leading up to the NCAA 5000. How is this known? What was the minimal training?
2 days running per week supplemented by cross-training in the gym - you know, the ideal for top distance runners and especially female xc runners.

But would not the top ALA and OSU ladies initially want to play it safe, keying off of Chmiel and Tuohy?

But if NC State hangs back too long, expecting others to do the work, then they would be increasing the chances of New Mexico grabbing the trophy. Therefore, by deduction, NCState will have to play pacesetter, on this course.
