Bayi's earlier 3:32.2 was worth 3:49 even by the over-conservative 1.08 equivalence factor, so big deal. Usual case of the mile WR lagging behind the 1500 WR until some Brit or American goes after it. Rest of the world doesn't really care about that.
Bayi also broke Ryun's mile record before Walker did, although his mile record was inferior to his earlier 1500 record at the 1974 Commonwealth Games, in which he led every step of the way and still managed to hold off fast finishers including Walker, Jipcho, and Dixon. Roger Bannister himself called Bayi's 1500 WR "the greatest race I've ever seen," and I feel the same way.
I'm not sure why your comment got so many "thumbs down" -- perhaps because it wasn't celebrating Walker (who was, indeed, a great runner), perhaps because you suggested (correctly) that inferior mile records tend to get undue attention among Brits and Americans, and perhaps because you tend to say things that many people (including me) don't like. But I appreciate your point here, particularly because Bayi, a truly great runner and human being, gets so little attention outside Tanzania, especially among Brits and Americans.
