I like it for 110 [100] hurdles, where a clipped hurdle can take out a likely medalist.
Would it allow a false start DQ another chance?
The article stated, "The final regulations of the format, including the timetable as well as system of advancement in each event, will be announced well in advance of the Olympic Games, World Athletics have promised."
It looks like they haven't even decided how they are going to implement this yet. I certainly hope it doesn't allow false starts.
World Athletics to introduce repechage round in track events for Paris 2024
Runners knocked out in the opening round of track events from 200 to 1500 metres at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will get another opportunity to continue in the competition after World Athletics announced they are to introduce a repechage round. Under the new format approved by the World Athletics Council, athletes who do not qualify by place in round one heats, including the hurdles, will have a second chance to qualify for the semi-finals by participating in repechage heats.
This seems a bit bizarre.. My thoughts are just have a set number proceed from each heat and the number in the final just be a few less. Seems the fairest way to go.
I would rather have the small q have to beat a large Q to get in. So if 2 semifinals of a 1500, take 4 large Qs and up to 4 small qs. There cold be as few as 8 in the final or as many as 12 but those additional 4 had to run faster than at least one big Q.
You want to make it more complicated?
This is how the 1500 should go:
4 heats in the first round. Top 6 in each heat make it to the semis. Then top 6 from each semi goes to the final.
If 3:50 moves on and 3:35 doesn’t, too bad. If you can’t make top 6 in a fast race in a prelim, you don’t get to medal.
Having 6th and 7th place finishers run an additional race to move on is weird.
I’d go a different way. Put the top 4 fastest runners in world straight to the final and let the rest run prelims to join them. That will get them shooting for fast times leading up to the championships.
How do you determine the top 4 fastest runners? Someone who had the best time in Jan but lost form come July would be in the top 4 and shouldn't be.
