I don’t get exited about freshman girls times anymore. When sophomore year comes and their bodies change will see if she continues to run great.
I hope she is one of the that doesn’t get devistated by her body changing.
Engelhardt's body seems to have already matured, so I don't think the whole "bodies change" thing will be problem for her like it is for a lot of freshman girls. She seems to have already passed that.
Having seen Englehardt run in person at the AMOC, she is indeed a physical talent. My concern is that she will be a bit "used and abused" via overracing - she tripled in a dual meet the week of MOC. Hopefully she gets good coaching, stays healthy and continues to enjoy running.
People exaggerate the problem of "she ran too many races in a dual meet." I know someone who is running Arcadia who just ran the 400, 800, 1600, 3200 in a dual meet. Big deal. That's only 3.75 miles, which is less than they would usually run in a practice.
The top girls take it pretty easy in their dual meet "races."
interestingly she lives near NPHS... would she dare to transfer?
If Engelhardt moved to Newbury Park she would probably run slightly faster, and also increase the likelihood of burning out in high school. I think she should stay where she is.
I'd much rather see Engelhardt have a long career instead of being the next Mary Cain.

Thats the great thing about Newbury Park. They don'y burn out. Ventura is over racing her, she would never do that at Newbury Park.
That being said, it looks like she live in Ventura and will stay there. Hope they pull the range back on her over racing. She is only a Freshman and they don't need to race her a million times a season.
It's the psychological/emotional aspect for a young kid morw than the physical....
Well, for A LOT of freshman girls their main problem ends up being a physical one. But I agree that for Engelhardt it's a more a potential psychological/emotional problem than a physical one. We'll see. But so far I haven't seen any sign of that.
Many high school students are excited by how much they break their PB's from one year to the next. But Engelhardt is already so fast, that will breaking her mile PB by .5 - 1.0 seconds per year for the next 3 years be exciting enough to keep motivating her? I hope so.
Looked around a bit for Mary's 400 times in HS but couldn't find anything. Any ideas? Or even when she was a pro would be interested to know if she ever threw down any solid 4x4 splits.
I do not have Mary Decker's data, but for curiosity, I looked up Mary Cain's freshman data for high school:
4:17.84 - 1500 meters - NY State Outdoor Champ ... (converts to roughly a 4:38 mile time) 4:41.8 - 1600 meter DMR relay split - Green Dragon Relays 2:03.74 - 800 meter relay split - NB Outdoor Nationals 0:55.5h - 400 meters - Fulton Invite
With respect to 400 meters, that was Mary Cain's best ever 400 meter race ... she said was able to do workout 400 repeats near that time when training as a pro, but she never faster.
Her race in that 4x800 is pretty mind-boggling. Camera work is atrocious unfortunately, so it's tough to really say what she went through that first 400 in, but it's clearly well under 60.
Almost makes me sad seeing this. Her form was really beautiful as a freshman and yet Salazar, like 90%+ of posters here who watch the video think it was absolutely trash. Movement patterns are so misunderstood smh. They really turned her into a robot trying to "fix" her.
Cain was literally in sub-2:00 shape at this point; you know "right race right pacing" and all that.
According to Milesplit this beats Mary Decker's hand timed 4:40.1 from 1973. Englehardt is in the 8th grade. The race was at the Runninglane Track Championships in Huntsville, Alabama. https://www.milesplit.com/articles/...

A better comparison is Mary Decker who ran 2:02 and 4:40 at the same age. Mary ended up with a 1:56 PR and don't think Sadie quite has that speed but we will see.

400m pr is 52.77 from 1978, according to worldathletics.org. She was 19 at the time.

That's pretty impressive for a runner who would go on to set the WR in the 10K four years later.

Wow, she was so little back then! What fearlessness. You are completely incorrect, however, her form needed massive upgrades, so much wasted motion. I can see what Salazar saw in her beyond her natural talent and fearlessness... she almost resembles a young Ethiopian, but they have impeccable form. So if he could clean up her form, ensure all energy moving in the right direction, boom you get a World Junior Gold Medalist.
