I know I am just one example, but I couldn't wait to register in 2018 for the 2019. I would listen to those podcasts the BAA would put out once every couple weeks breaking down the registration process- "don't read into whether or not your credit card authorization falls off" "it is not first come first serve", "as long as you registered on time we will hold your spot while we verify", all that stuff that people over-react to. I was glued to the cutoff announcement threads and announcement.
This time around I just don't care at all. Probably a lot has to do with I can't really afford the trip, especially since I done it already. I already am, and will always be, a BM finisher, so it's not like now I can be a 2x finisher and feel like anyone will care. I imagine others out there are in the same boat, and for the first time bqer's who do have that desire and motivation and resources to run it, maybe with the new 5 minute standard being lowered there are just not as many qualifiers.
Didn't Boston have a situation last year where they didn't have enough registrants so they were inviting people afterwards to sign up even if they didn't have a qualifying time?

That’s the rumor. Yes they were contacting people. But they had a qualifying time, but didn’t make the x:xx cutoff. There’s no vaccine requirement for next year -yet-. This year seemed back to normal. I don’t think the marathon is worried about filling spots. Races are back. People are vaccinated. It’s a non issue moving forward.
Last year I finished pumped to run again this year since I knew I already had a usable BQ. After a few weeks and some accounting, I realized it is just way too expensive to travel back east and run every year. Hopefully I can make it again someday.
I don’t know why anyone complains about entry fees, the expense problem is the travel.

This year was more than I expected. Boston this year came at a transition for me so I couldn’t ball out. Hotel was more expensive. Food was significantly more. Flight was twice as much. I assume those new prices are here to stay. Sucks.

Long story - short: My wife and I saved $2,800 per year cutting out our daily stop at Starbucks (on the way to work) in exchange for $2,000 to fly, stay and transportation for the BM. That's for 'BOTH OF US' - I run and she cheers. We often don't notice the impact of daily incremental expenditures. Fancy coffee vs The Boston Marathon; a no-brainer for me.

I'm gonna have to skip a lot of Starbucks to go to Boston AND Kona every year. Just KQ'd again after paying for this year's trip... Think that'll be it for Kona for a while even if I keep qualifying.
I'll stick with the way cheaper Boston trip for me racecation.
I'm thinking no cutoff again. They'll probably lower the charity-runner minimum donation too!Heck I'd go as far to say that they'll start accepting 3:10:59 for a 3:10 BQ like they did years ago.1- Airfare/gas and hotels are a...
