Paul MF Chelimo USA Bronze - proves the doubters wrong

From the rulebook:

163.3 - Each competitor shall run in a direct line after entering the final straightaway unless there is another competitor in his or her path. In other words, you can change lanes to pass someone, but not to impede anyone from passing you.

163.4. Any competitor or participant responsible for jostling, running across, or obstructing another competitor or participant so as to impede his or her progress shall be liable to disqualification in that event.

"A competitor shall not be disqualified unless a material advantage has been gained".

Did he jostle or obstruct the fourth place? Did he break his stride?

People who doubted Chelimo's chances to medal and/or hold his own on the track forget that he became a citizen by running for and serving in the United States Army!

Never doubt a soldier.

He is a fierce competitor! He isn't the fastest (12:57 PB) but he always puts it all on the line when he races. The only other runner I can think of that is as or more competitive than Chelimo is Muktar Edris (sad he wasn't there). Chelimo can also be very funny. He is the definition of the American dream.

Love Paul and for those who don't think he is "American" enough -- I think his whole overconfident attitide is so American!

Paul Chelimo is only 83rd fastest 5000m man all-time, but he is always a man for the moment. A no excuse athlete. You never hear about him complaining about nagging injuries. He's age 30. He has to be running through injuries. Chelimo never complains about jet lag or high humidity. Congratulations to Paul Chelimo. He shows up and earns medals.

Not sure there was much doubt that Chelimo was one of the medal contenders, just healthy skepticism if anyone thought he (or almost anyone in this race) was guaranteed to medal. I would’ve been surprised if, say, Cheptegai didn’t medal at all or if Fisher happened to medal.

That's what I was thinking. I'm wondering where the rest of the tough "American Spirit" went.

I truly am dismayed by this path to citizenship. How much do these WCAP runners actually participate in defense activities? If they are really soldiers and not an athletic publicity campaign for the armed services, then I am wrong in my annoyance.
