Georgetown:
* 4 Penn Relay 4x800 championship winning teams in the last 8 years
* Have produced 40 sub 1:50 800 meter runners
Also, Arkansas & Michigan have great middle distance programs
yeah. He will also belittle you and give you nothing but negative comments until the day you either quit or you bring home an all american plaque. Of course, when you put enough talent through a meat grinder, 1 or 2 legit runners are going to come out, but just think of all the talent He wastes by enticing them to UConn with promises and then pulling the rug out without being given a chance.
UConn would be a good school for an established 800 runner, i.e. someone already running 1:50 or under. For your typical D-1 caliber high school runner, a 1:53-52 kid...it's a hit or miss decision because the chances that you will end up as one of the victims of his system rather than a beneficiary is much greater.
All of the programs mentioned have had success recently with halfmilers and they are all exceptional programs, but if you're talking historical pedigree combined with recent success the list gets a lot shorter, and probably wouldn't include many of those schools. One stellar individual does not a good program make.
My personal opinion... if you only consider the 800, I think Georgetown tops the list. In 2000 Gtown grads had 2 of the 3 US Olympic spots and their 4x 800 at Penn is consistently in the mix and was 1st, 2nd, 1st from 2002-2004 including the fastest time (and 6th fastest ever) in 20 years in 2004 (7:13).
Arizona State University and besides perfect training weather!!
Yes...
Not sure what Neugebauer is doing but I think he's still giving it a try...seems to be stuck at a 1:47.5 to 1:48 range, pretty consistent though. Can't seem to get off that plateau.
I haven't read all the replies but I have to say from my exposure to the 800m scene, UC Santa Barbara is a pretty damn good school to run a fast 800 at. I have seen them develop some good talent into great talent.
USC
how many guys that went to uconn ever broke 150 in high school? zero
1:51-zero, 152-zero, 153-3(2 are on the team now, one a frosh)

UTEP.If you know what's good for you.
Conducive climate and weather ,High altitude,Best coaches, A lot of European athletes (and other international athletes for that matter) in all sports and a great education to boot.
Washington had a good year last year.
Ryan Brown 1:47 pac 10 champ
Austin Abbott (a freshman) ran 1:48.5 at stanford
Shane Charles 1:49 indoors and I saw that he was a 50.point 400H
Bruce Jackson 1:49 outdoors
Abbott was the only one not on their 4x4 and they ran 3:03 - 3:04
All of these guys were 1:55 guys out of hs (i am not sure about the 400h guy)
Not the best university but they had a good year at 800m last year.
