Good point. Add Doris Brown to the list!

Chamoody!
Hard to believe that there are 41 posts above mine and Bob Kennedy never got mentioned once.
Question: If Bob Kennedy and Bob Schul meet in a crowded room of runners, would anyone even notice that they're there?
Do you actually think that Kennedy is on par with Rono, Virgin, Komen, etc.??Kennedy was good, but the guys mentioned above deserved to win gold medals because they were the best at the time. Kennedy never was.

Tergat won medals, albeit silver both times, in 1996 and 2000
jared leto...oh wait, that was a movie.
Cmon guys. You can't put Virgin anywhere close to Rono. How many WR's has Virgin held? How many did Rono have? Virgin is probably the best American, but Rono was the most dominant runner in the world from 3K all the way to 10K for an extended time. You're embarrassing yourself with your lack of knowlege.
Did Bannister ever win an olympic medal?
When it came to big races he was huge
This is a great thread. I came up with a top 5.
1-Daniel Komen
2-Eamon Coghlan
3-Ron Clarke
4-Steve Scott
5-Craig Virgin
All top-flight, world-class runners of their respective generations who never caught the breaks at Olympic races. Ouch!
Yes, an interesting thread, but a lot of you seem to be showing your age (your young age!) if you don't have Rono at the top or near the very top of your list. Komen was incredible, but Rono was even more impressive. The rest of your list doesn't even begin to compare with Rono.
As was previously stated, Ron Clarke does have an Olympic medal.
didnt gilbert okari just win every road race he ran this year? hasnt john korir won every major road race once, and some of them 3 or 4 times?
Also, how does KK fit in. pretty unbelievable racing, just didnt give a crap about the OG.

Kipketer hands down he dominated the 800M for years. No one has even come close to 1:42 let alone his record.
Didn't Rono set a WR in a duel meet?

Craig Virgin
1. Rated number one in the world 1980
2. Had best time in the world 1980
3. Won the World XC championship in 1980!....and 1981(all the best where there!)
4. You can argue he had one of the greatest three years of running and competing that the world has ever seen between 1979 to 1981. His prime being in 1980.
Henry Rono set 4 World Records in 81 days (3000, steeple, 5000, 10,000). Again set the WR in the 5000 in 1981. Virgin would have been looking at his backside in the 1980 Olympics. There really is no comparison. I consider myself very, very lucky to have seen him run once (cross race in Wisconsin when I was in high school).

Go do your homework douchebag.
Rono set the 5K mark during the 81 day span at a duel meet at Berkeley.
radcliffe...
this one is easy, the best runner never to win a medal was walter payton. And he is definitely a distance runner, he ran the longest distance in the history of the NFL.
