65-75mpw easy only (in "zone 2" HR)

    Doing runs at 90-95bpm with a maxHR of 190. 16:30 5k doing runs at 12 to 15 pace was a bit painful. He didn't make any progress. Not surprising though because their does seem to be a minimum for aerobic benefit to be realized and flip the "ON" switch, and that seems to be 55%-60% of HRmax.

    Thank you. It is ridiculous that so many people here spread false and bad training advice.

    Parsec, what pace/intensity level do you recommend for the weekly long run?

    Whatever intensity that puts you around 60-70% of max heart rate

    I'm no expert, but I think you've got a point. I'm beyond "master" (73). Inspired by Ed Whitlock's approach, I've moved over the past year to long and slow, with only occasional HR >75%. I'm no Whitlock, but I think my new program has substantially improved my performance while substantially reducing my injuries. No doubt some of the "balls-to-the-wall" no pain/no gain attitude reflects the experience of really good runners, but I'd say that some of it arises from excess testosterone.
