Joshua Cheptegei's solo 3000m TT before Monaco. Is he ready to break Bekele's WR?

He finished 7th in Diamond League Shanghai 5000m last year.

Kejelcha and Barega have run faster and at an younger age than Jakob.

Jakob is also an early bloomer and won't improve much.

This is all correct but countdown to someone on here talking about how Barega and Kejelcha are actually 5 years older than their bdays.

Odds are that Jakob will improve at every distance still, as he is still only 19. 4:50 flat already says that he is going to have a good year. Cheptegei's 12:51 on the roads, along with his 10000m performance in Doha and his world xc title on an insanely difficult course, plus a narrow defeat by Mo Farah at World's in 2017, show that he is going to be among the greats of all time, and so should not be discounted in this attempt. I've not seen a fast 5000m on the track at Monaco, where there are usually fast times at 1500m but if the weather is cool enough, he should run in the low 12:40s. If Moh Ahmed could run 12:47 with slower pacing and a 3:59 last 1600m in Oregon, surely Cheptegei can do significantly better. I wouldn't bet on the world record just yet. That is not an easy record and I assume he'll have to take a few attempts over a couple years to potentially get it. I think that the record is sub 61 pace/400m!

That makes no sense. Chepteguei outkicked Barega in a 2mile race last year. He also won the 5000m final in Brussels last year.

He can certainly kick if necessary. But he makes sure it's not necessary.

The paces slows in the middle and they run like a 12:51. So really fast but an all time top 10 type performance. I have no clue what the guys (or Jacob's) actually potential is but so far we haven't seen times like 7:25 where you go many I wonder what he can do in a 5k. I would love to see him hammering. away on WR pace for as long as possible though.

He will run 12:19.99

Worth about a 12:45, or thereabouts.

Barega broke from the field several laps before and crashed attempting to set a great time. Cheptegai and Chelimo caught him when he was already toast.

But Cheptegai did not outkick him.

Each time he had to kick in a 3000 or a 5000m he did not win.

Sorry I missed that and Lausanne (4th) but either way for his big target races guy has performed.

Did he or did he not beat a proven 12:43 5000m runner in a 2mile? It does not matter if he tried to break away. He was outkicked in the final stretch.

Cheptegei did manage to run away on that 5000m final where the Ethiopians s**t their pants and were afraid to pursue him.

He won that 2 miles when Barega burnt himself . Even Chelimo caught Barega.

Less than one month earlier a real kick happened in a 3000m race. Barega smoked Cheptegai by more than one second in the last lap.

The look Cheptegai had when Barega just casually passed him easily in the last 200....

That is a speed difference.

Cheptegai has a very good kick for 10 000m but if there is a pack at the end of a 5000m he is toast.

Don t get me wrong Cheptegai is a great athlete but he doest have a great kick for 5000/3000.

Yes, Jakob lack the stamina, he can't run at a high pace. The only way he beat Cheptegai is in a slow race in the last 400m.

Cheptegai kick is good but not very good for 5000

Here is the video of him vs Barega in a fast 3000m where he pushed the pace.

Given how much he drafted behind Joshua, he barely outsprinted him in the last straight. If Barega pushed the pace, the reverse would have happened.

These guys have the kick because they are strong, but if the pace is fast enough, nobody will have anything left, Barega would crack if Joshua goes 60:xx lap after lap for 5000m, simple as that.
