Imagine bending over backwards this hard to avoid the fact that whites owned, tortured and murdered black people without repercussions for hundreds of years. Here’s a twist - they did it to themselves!

It seems to me that prejudice against any group rises when a particular group‘s (race, ethnicity, religion, etc) population increases past the “novelty” level and is perceived as threatening to the status quo by certain segments of the dominant group. In France in the 20’s, African Americans were treated well because there were so few. Fast forward to the 21st century where they now have large minority groups who face prejudice. Same thing in Germany with their large recent immigrant population. In the US, many groups like Italians, Irish, etc experienced prejudice during their waves of immigration but due to looking like the dominant culture (and being Christian) were able to assimilate and blend in over a few generations. For those who look different that blending in never fully happens, no matter how “American” that person is and continues to be seen as an “other” and a threat to many.

I enjoy poking fun at everyone, regardless of race. I’m an equal opportunity offender, but I don’t do it maliciously. Hell, I’m hispanic and I rail against my “own” people. But my mom on other hand is a huge racist and hates blacks with a passion. I can understand disliking a few individuals for specific reasons, but she throws everyone into the same boat. And then she complains about the racism she has experienced as a hispanic woman in the US... oh the hypocrisy.

As far as I’m aware, I’ve experienced very little if any discrimination or racism. I think behaviour, attitude, and education go a long way when it comes to acceptance, at least that’s how I feel. And I can say this having traveled extensively and living in a few different countries.

You said you’re Hispanic, but didn’t say anything about your race. Do you look like Sammy Sosa, Emilio Estevez, or Carlos Mencia?

For one, people from Zambia didn't go into other countries that looked different than them and subjugate them like white people did.

For two, I live here, not there, so I would like to affect change here.

For three, again: "it's bad elsewhere, so it's ok that I think we're less bad here and there's no reason to be better" is a terrible defense if you recognize the humanity in others. Stop sucking. Be better.

I’m Asian-American. Been to Europe and did not experience any racism or micro-agressions. Maybe because there were always a TON of Korean tourists everywhere. Also, I disagree with other posters about Asia being more racist than the rest of the world. The difference is that it’s not institutionalized or systemic racism, so the people aren’t meaning to be overtly racist, but rather slip up sometimes and say technically “racist” things. Like if you asked a black person why they don’t tan or injected unintentional appropriation into an interaction. So I’d say it’s more of a curiosity and a fascination with the novel. Our family took a white friend of ours along one time when we were visiting our relatives in China, and most of the locals would stare or giggle because of the newness of his height and blue eyes (which they had probably only seen in movies), not because they were mocking him.

Okay, good: we have all established that humans are tribal and that oppression exists around the world. The United States touts itself -- and sells itself -- on the idea that this country is special and is supposed to lead the way to eliminating those divisions. So let's get to it. We can't use these comparisons to suggest that "things here aren't so bad" when compared to X country.

Things here ARE bad. This country was built on systemic oppression of Native Americans and enslaved African people. There is zero question about that. And yet, here we are, and some people still need education to understand that racism is a problem here.

Stop comparing our society to others and start looking internally to think about what role you play in the system and what you can do to help it get better.

I've seen that in my small American town plenty of times. That said most Asian countries are some of the most unwelcoming to outsiders.

Because no one from another area strives to live in those backward nations. Those nations also don't pride themselves on being beacons of freedom and humanity.

Our concern is with racism in our country. We have a lot of problems that need to be fixed. This isn't about racism elsewhere, which exists often at very high and visible levels.

The US is racist and I don't condone any of it. But the kind of things said by Europeans casually just doesn't happen in the US. They say openly racist things all the time without pause or concern. Not to mention how they throw bananas at black soccer players.

The US only seems the most racist because 1.racial minorities are given a louder voice than anywhere else in the world, and 2. the media profits from inflaming racial issues which gets clicks and generates ad revenue.

I lived in the Middle East for 6 years(Abu Dhabi and Dubai) and have traveled to most corners of the world. Racism is significantly worse in places like China and India.

Huh? Do you know how many immigrant workers live in Saudi Arabia? And racial discrimination against them is a big issue there. Here is a latest example.

Slavery has been practiced for as long as records have been kept. Slavery in America began with opposing African tribes selling each other. Spanish Marrano (Jews) slave traders capitalized on African treachery by trafficking the poor souls to the new world where they were sold to wealthy land owners in both the north and south.

Poor white trash southerners could not afford to own slaves even if they wanted to. What should be of interest to anyone concerned is; what was the racial/religious background of the actual majority of slave owners? WASP, Jewish, white Catholic, black?

Be honest if you're able.
