I suggest adding a once a week session of running drills. Do some kind of high knees, and some kind of butt kicks, maybe some kind of quick feet. Here are some ideas.

Also, do about 5 strides after the drills. I like to do them on grass. Do them after one of your shorter easy runs once a week.

Apple Watch 5, and I am not running on a track and don't have access to one.

This has to be one of the oddest trolls on let’s run. There is no chance that a healthy 18 year old who genuinely wants to get faster runs 12:30 miles. Others in this thread that are suggesting many people run this pace are talking about middle aged women. Have you ever seen a healthy 18 year old male running 12:30 as their pace? Even the slowest guys on my HS with zero talent were under 7 minutes a mile in races.

According to the presidential fitness test, the 50th percentile for 17 yr old boys is 7:04. So the slowest guys on your HS team had about the average talent. (The 85th percentile is 6:06.)

Why are you running easy? You’re not doing workouts, so you have nothing to recover from. Run faster.

(Personally I think he’s trolling, but I have encountered people who started running by just casually jogging along. Once they realized that you got used to the discomfort of running faster pretty quick, they all got faster!)

It would be helpful if we knew your top speed over 100m. Can you buy a measuring tape, even a ten meter one, and measure an accurate flat 100m course. Then with a flying start, time yourself in seconds over this 100m.

I agree with previous posters about adding strides and drills to your runs. To make your general runs faster, I would shorten the time from 45 or 35 minutes down to 20 minutes. Mentally it's easier to push yourself over a shorter time. I think your 12:30 pace will become much faster for these 20 minute runs.

Also, for the time being, forget about doing set "easy" run days. None of your days should be easy until you get fitter and faster. Psyche yourself up to the idea that every day will be hard to some degree.

That’s not exactly true. You are evaluating the percentile including people that probably never run except for the test. I’m talking guys who showed up to practice, kind of tried sometimes and still broke 7. I actually think your data further proves my point more than anything.
