That sounds like a waste of time.

Mark Thorne, the best thing that program has going for it.

I wonder if the Stanford AD enjoyed NY and Philly?..I’m pretty sure Vanhoy was busy vacationing according to Instagram.
Those were all photo shopped. The perfect cover! He was really in Palo Alto.
Stanford jumps, throws, and sprints... who ya got?

Connie price smith to Stanford with Jon smith coming with her
The only way that would happen is if they just hired them to get Ryan VAn Hoy as their XC coach.
That is ridiculous. But they are friends. So would not doubt any smith connection to Stanford. Do not think that is John's best student demographic.

It seems like the Smith's aren't doing so well in Mississippi. Did they get 11th and 12th at SEC meet? Also, scored zero points at NCAA. Distance runners scoring all the points.

Houston Franks could have stayed in Starkville as long as he wanted. He did incredible things there but clearly understands how to build a solid SEC distance program without a tremendous amount of funding or scholarships so LSU was smart to go after him. There's undoubtedly more resources in Baton Rouge. Have you seen the new football locker rooms?!? They are fully invested in athletics and I'd guess that the third or four (maybe even fifth or sixth) track assistant makes what most DI head coaches make.
What, in LSU's long track history, makes you think that they place a priority on cross country or distance running?

Nobody has mentioned the obvious - he can probably recruit the heck out of juco kids. Why offer scholarships to 18 year olds when you can offer them to 20 year olds who are better?
Having a good juco pipeline can be a gigantic advantage, similar to the New Mexico women having a team full of transfers. Just look what Wadeline Jonathas did this year (although I'm not sure if her previous school is technically a juco).
Bama has definitely added coaches to their staff recently for pipelines. They got a guy who I think volunteer coaches for them who helped get the Kenyan connect.
That would have been done by former coach, Walker. That was all he ever did, receive Kenyan runners as gifts from his connection in Kenya. At all stops on his career, no less.

Speaking of Rocky Top. Can anyone with actual inside knowledge of JJ’s time in Knoxville speak to how that went and how he could be perceived as a viable candidate in a distance driven program such as Stanford?
He was very good with middle-distance women. Not so much for XC. He's a low mileage guy. He won a couple NCAA championships when his mid-distance crew dominated.
When he was given the men, it all went downhill.
He runs a "cult-like" program. Meaning big buy-in is they foundation and if you aren't in it, you'll have a tough time.
A strange higher for Stanford. Stanford recruits itself so they'll still be good, but I'd expect XC results to fall off, middle distance to stay or improve.
Don't think this guy, J J Clark, was as well received by his athletes as some (including him) make out. I remember watching some news organization doing a piece on him (Tennessee) and he tried to show some sort of familiarity with one of the better runners who happened to be standing right there at the moment. Sarah Bowman. His 'embrace' was not well received and very awkward for her. You could tell by her expression.

What’s with all this Van Hoy hype? They didn’t score a single point at NCAA distance area.

Heard the same thing. This leaves Clark with an entire staff to fill and August is nearly here.
Hard to imagine it’s narrowed... best prediction seems to be vanhoy for distance!
seems practical that he would look to his old conference (SEC) to look for a XC coach. Van Hoy has shown himself to be a pretty good one.

Well good for Montana! Bringing in a coach that produced a plethora of 26:00/27:00 8k guys and 23:00/24:00 6k women. Should be competitive in the Big Sky and Mountain Regional. And yes, I know he was at the DIII level.
Is this further evidence of the current debate on this thread about HS coaches having trouble transitioning to college no matter how good you were at the HS level. This guy was a former 18 time coach of the year in Montana. Note: this isn't a commentary on his personality, how good of a family man he is, or any other non-coaching category, it's about results and the ability to produce them.
Anyone can take a HS freshman at 13 and make them better by 18. Literally anyone. Hell, the high school kid can do it on their own by simply running 5 days a week and hitting puberty.
Best distance coaches are high school? All college coaches do is recruit.
Statements like this are further indication that high school coaches are out of their league heading to college. If HS coaches were so good then why are no elites coached by them,?
A high school coach has the luxury of the structured home life and school hours. They don’t have to recruit. Recruiting is absolutely essential. The fact you think it is a negative only proves you have zero idea what you’re talking about.
I like the way you think.

in my opinion, no athlete legitimately PR's by a second in a 400 meter race. Not someone who has been a past Olympian, for sure.

Makes no sense at all. Connie doesn't coach anything. If she's not the head coach doing admin and being a figurehead what does she bring to the table other than her husband?
